“Excellent.... for the train lover and novice (aka wife)”
Reviewed August 20, 2012

My husband loves steam trains. So, I (his wife and non-train expert) have been on numerous rides and historic sites. This pleased my husband with lots of steam trains and an awesome roundhouse. This pleased me by being an amateur photographer, I enjoyed photographing and viewing the vast array of trains, cabooses, and train cars. I enjoyed the (rotary- husband gave me the word) snowplow as I had never seen one before. Also, we were able to see a lot in a little amount of time. I would go back and trust me, so would he.

“A railroad museum with a large collection”
Reviewed August 20, 2012

Interactivity is the trend in museums these days. Yet outdoor railroad museums always have filled the need for a child's natural desire to explore. Therefore, for families with small children, I tend to rate them higher than most museums with static exhibits. There is a self guided cell phone tour that gives detail on some of the exhibits, and it was easy to use. We went during the hottest time of the day (bad planning on my part), so about 1/3 of the way through the site I had to take the kids in to cool off. Fortunately there is a kids play caboose downstairs where they can put on conductor uniforms and make their own signal flags - A nice reprieve from the heat that kept them busy until we were ready to go back outside.
Don't expect the cushiness and quality of display like you would find at the California State Railroad Museum and similar indoor museums. There are lots of rolling stock lacking interpretive information, but it is a large collection so it is understandable. The lighting for the interior exhibits could be improved as well. This is a rugged outdoor museum run by volunteers that seems more focused on restoring an overwhelming amount of equipment versus investing in the aesthetics of interior exhibits. There is a viewing area in the roundhouse which you can view restoration at work. Some of the area around the immediate vicinity of the depot is paved, making it fairly accessible for those with strollers. This is a must visit if you or someone in your family is interested in trains.

“A Great collection of Trains”
Reviewed August 17, 2012

The Colorado Railroad museum has a large collection of locomotives, rolling stock and railroad items. It is well layed out and an easy walk to view the equipment. There is an HO model railroad in the basement. Kids as well as adults will love this museum. Afterword stroll around quaint Golden and enjoy the shops and food.

“Train nuts rejoice!”

Great way to spend an afternoon. If you love trains, or even just like them. The staff is very into it, as they should be. Combine this with a tour of Coors Brewery for a full day.

“Great display in small area”
Reviewed August 8, 2012

Large variety, form models to full size. Visit on a steam day to really appreciate the work which has been done here, learn about Colorado Railroad history, and then go to one of the preserved railways in the state.
