Not only uphill, but over rocks and boulders. Not scrambling, but more like an intense stairmaster workout at 7500 feet. You really should have decent footwear and water if you want to make it. Take poles if you have them.
But then, when you do reach the top, you will be rewarded with a fantastic place to sit and relax. Spouting water from a rock feeding a tranquil mountain lake. Sit for a while, eat and drink something and gather yourself because the descent is difficult too.
Also, parking can be a real issue, especially on weekends. Try to go as early as you can.

I had mixed feelings about this climb after reading up on what others had said, but was determined to make it to the top once I saw the photos. I must say, it was difficult, it was longer than I expected, and the last part up to the lake is practically vertical (but you have a metal railing in the stone to hang on to). The secret is, start out early not only because it is cooler and there are less people, but also in order to get a parking space at the trail head. All along the trail, there are places to rest. Use them, if need be. This is not a race to the top. Water is important too. I had only been in Colorado for one day before the climb so water is super important for the altitude. Once at the lake there is a boardwalk which allows you to sit and enjoy the outstanding view of this crystal-clear lake and relish the fact you made it. Once you have rested, hike up another five minutes to see the spout of water splashing straight out of the rock. Once again, it is not an easy hike, but it is do-able if you take your time and start early before it gets too hot.

We did this trail the first day in high altitude, so our mistake. The trail is so difficult as to not be fun at all; I could not believe I saw people in flip flops, with infants, and more out of shape than we were. BELIVE the reviews that tell you it's crowded and HARD. The lake is beautiful, but still debating whether the climb was worth it.
