“Strenuous but worth it”
Reviewed September 25, 2012

This is a strenuous uphill climb but well worth it. Be prepared with good hiking shoes, water and a snack to enjoy when you get to the top.

“Up Up and Away!”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

The trailhead is a bit tricky to access by car; you can only exit the highway going east...and get back on the highway going west. So if you are traveling westward, do some reseach on which exit you can turn around on to get back to the trailhead (sorry I'm not of help here...we came from the west).

We were there on a Wednesday afternoon in September, and probably saw close to 50 people on the trail. It is pretty steep, so you do have to pull over for people passing up and down. Do bring water, and hiking shoes...while only a mile, it is a mile going up. It went fairly quick, and the lake at the top was beautiful.

Just before you get to the lake, the rock steps get steep, but there is a railing to help.

There are toilets at the parking lot.

Have fun!

“A difficult hike, but worth the effort!!”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

Since our daughter moved to Colorado six years ago, we've seen some beautiful natural sights, but this is definitely in the Top 10. If you're going through Glenwood Canyon (a beautiful sight in itself), and you can spare 2-3 hours, you should NOT miss this! It is a difficult hike as noted by other reviewers - wear STURDY shoes as there are many rocks. Bring at least a liter of water - more if the weather is hot. Bring energy food (trail mix, PBJ, whatever). Remember as you're walking back DOWN the trail that trail etiquette is that those hiking UP the trail have the right of way - so pull off to the side and let those folks get by you before resuming your hike down. The trail is scenic in itself - shaded, but beautiful nature, including a clear mountain stream alongside the path (most of the way). We visited in September - aspens were beautiful! Near the top, the panoramic views of the valley and canyon walls are spectacular! The lake is fed by 40 foot waterfalls over rock covered with algae, and the water is SO clear! Travertine (sp) deposited at the lake bottom makes the lake a beautiful blue. Then another 100 yards up is spouting rock, another cool (literally and figuratively) sight to see. Enjoy! But please keep this site clean and don't disturb it for our children's and grandchildren's sake!! DON'T get in the water!! It messes up the delicate balance of the ecosystems in the area. Don't take your dog on this hike. If possible, go on a weekday (parking is limited). And remember to be prepared - only 1.5 miles (first .3 is concrete pathway), but 1020 feet rise in elevation makes this pretty darned steep in spots - but it's worth it!!

“Worth the effort”
Reviewed September 20, 2012

Very well marked and traveled trail. Hiked on a Saturday so it was a little crowded. It took be about an hour each way and was only slowed due to so many hikers. The final 100 yards are very steep but has handrails. The lake and falls at the top was very beautiful and was only marred by a couple of young people that fell in (accidentally on purpose) and muddied the water. Better to do on a weekday.

“Spectacular hike, worth the effort!”

Much of the hike is in the shade, which helps! Bring hiking poles, it's very steep. Don't forget the short detour at the top to Spouting Rock!
