You can do this tour on your own, no guide is necessary. Beautiful canyon, easy and level course.

What a great path... you can't get lost and it has lots of nice places to stop along the way.

This trail runs for 18 miles parallel to Interstate Highway 70 through Glenwood Canyon, on the north side of the Colorado River. The canyon is very deep and narrow, and the river occupies most of the canyon floor.

When the old U.S. Highway 6 was expanded to a 4-lane interstate in the 1970s, there were millions of dollars per mile spent in an effort to preserve the scenic magnificense of the canyon to the extent possible. Part of this involved constructing this paved bicycle/hiking trail along with the highway. There are also 4 rest stops along the highway and trail that are among the most scenic on the entire Interstate Highway system and provide access to the Colorado River and side canyons (such as the one with Hanging Lake).

For most of its length, the trail is squeezed between the highway and the river. This provides wonderful views of the river, and when the river is running high in May and June, using the trail has much of the excitement of rafting the river. (In fact, the trail is so close to the river in places that a part of it was washed out by unusually high water this spring and required several months to repair.)

The only down-side of the trail is that it is so close to the highway along most of its length that the traffic noise is objectionable. There is a 50 mph speed limit that would substantially reduce the noise and safety hazard from sharp curves to motorists if it were enforced, but it is not, and a number of motorists die every year from accidents that generally are caused by speeding trucks. But the Colorado Department of Transportation generally deserves credit for having done the best that the rugged terrain allowed in incorporating this trail into the highway construction.

Rollerbladed along the path next to the river, great views, not crowded, clean rest stop near by and the path is well maintained and flat.
