“Delightful”

Ranked #1 of 1 Dessert in Fairplay

We were driving through Fairplay and we asked if there was a place that served an old fashioned ice cream soda. To our surprise they said yes! We were directed to Silver Scoop and what an excellent place this is. It’s just like stepping back in time with its green and white striped wall paper, pressed tin ceiling and marble counter top. We sat at the counter and ordered two chocolate ice cream sodas. They have dark chocolate ice cream! The woman who made them was delightful. The place was really busy. We’ve had sodas all over America and these are the best yet. They also have baked goods and we couldn’t leave without taking a couple of sticky buns with us. If you’re anywhere near Fairplay, do yourself a favor and stop by.

The ice cream is really good but what I like most about the Silver Scoop Creamery is their sandwiches. They are made on croissants and they load the meat. Their toppings are great also. The staff is always friendly and there is always people in there.

We happened on the Silver Scoop as we passed through Southpark. It is a delightful ice cream parlor that also sells coffee, baked goods and sandwiches. The owner served us and took time to fill us in on the history of the building. The food was great, the servings large, and the prices modest.

Front street in Fairplay, CO is a hidden secret that holds a couple great restaurants, gift and candy stores and this ice cream shop with delicious hand scooped ice cream. One block off of the main thorough fare through town, Silver Scoop will deliver the refreshment you need after a day of hiking, mountain biking, skiing, horseback riding, fishing, ... you name it.
Also, the REAL South Park City old mining town museum is just up the street two blocks.

This place seems to be more for locals than tourists, with its out-of-the-way location a block southwest of Main Street, but it is worth seeking out. The ice cream is great, cheap, and comes in large quantities. The pastries are also fine, even the day-old ones that you can have for almost nothing. The place has old west decor (that appears to be authentic), with serving staff dressed as such also. Parking can be tough, but if you poke around on the side streets within a block you should find a place.

If you happen to be a climber, this is a good after-climb stop to decompress, whether or not that nearby Thirteener or Fourteener turned you back this time.

Incidentally, the only reason I downgraded "service" one notch is that you can occasionally find only one person trying to serve a line of folks that all decided to stop by simultaneously. The individuals behind the counter each do a fine job.
