“Great Hotel, Friendly Staff”
Reviewed September 22, 2010

A Riverside Inn is a great little (50 rooms or so) hotel that we stay in every year during our visits to the Fairplay area. Derek (the owner) and his staff are very friendly and efficient. The rooms are clean and equipped with LCD flat-panel TVs. There is a computer w/ printer in the lobby with high-speed internet access. In addition, free WiFi is available throughout the hotel.

We had one little problem and it pains me to even mention it because everyone up there is so nice... On our second day there we needed some extra time to get ready so had to turn the maid away and asked her to come back later. She must have misunderstood (her first (only) language was Spanish) because she didn't come back that day, the next day or even the day after that. I mentioned it to the front desk several times and it only got corrected on the fourth day. In the meantime, though, they were apologetic and we got towels from the front desk.

If I could offer one suggestion to Derek, it would be this: Most hotels at this price point offer a hot breakfast with protein (i.e, eggs and meat). Holiday Inn Express, in particular, has figured out how to do this in an efficient, cost-effective way with pre-made frozen omelets, scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage with a menu that changes every day (e.g., bacon and eggs one day, omelet and sausage the next, etc.). It would be nice to see something like this or in the alternative, dirt cheap frozen Jimmy Dean omelets or breakfast sandwiches sold from a freezer behind the front desk. I realize friends/family members coming in and scalping free food is a potential problem but I think this could be controlled.

On a final note, I am skeptical of the slew of one-star reviews left by a number of members of the same family who clearly had some sort of confrontation/altercation with the staff. There has got to be more to that story than they are telling, because their accusations seem far-fetched and out of character for the owner and staff. One person, for example, claimed the owner told him he was "from Afghanistan" and was anti-American and anti-military, etc. That certainly wasn't the owner of *this* hotel, whose family hails from eastern Europe - sheesh, their last name is Kopunec - can you get any more Czech than that?

Overall I can wholeheartedly recommend this hotel and I'll be staying there yet again next summer.

My boyfriend and I took a weekend trip to fairplay and stayed here. We found the rooms to be exceptionally clean. The flat screen TV's made a nice touch. We wanted to see the beautiful mountains and we talked to Derek (the hotel owner) and he was very helpful in giving us several different options and places to go. We ended up renting a couple of ATV's right out of the hotel and we had a blast!! He provided us with different things going on the weekend we were there, good places to eat, and told us what weekends to come back for fun events. The breakfasts in the mornings were good and we got the "at home" feeling from Derek and his staff. Overall the best place to stay in fairplay. We are both looking forward to going back soon!

We have used this hotel for several years and it is the best in Fairplay. Pool, Hot Tub, Breakfast room, Excellent Wireless Computer access in room and with lobby computer access avail. Easy access to highway. Owners are very accessible and helpful and furnish treats h-dogs and fireworks on the 4th. The rooms are furnished with TV. Refrigerator, hairdryer, coffee pots. They have a low tolerance for noisy guests and do not tolerate drunken activity on the premises. This is a big plus for our annual family gathering in Colorado. I highly recommend this hotel for your stay in the South Park area.

Overall this is a nice and clean hotel. The staff was courteous, helpful and responsive to requests made by our family. They offer the convenience of ATV rentals on site. Their restaurant and shopping recommendations were very helpful.

Although we booked a room for four, we only had towels for two each day. This required a daily call or trip to the front desk for more. Even if we hung them up per the placard to skip the laundering, all four were removed and replaced with only two clean towels.

Consistent with other reviews, the pool was beyond frigid but clean. Very limited television channels and volume controlled to a maximum of 50%. If the airconditioner/heater is running you cannot hear the TV. It would be nice to have some kid friendly TV available in the evening.

The breakfast was a very nice touch. Some reviews mentioned the waffle maker making a mess. Seriously? We have stayed at many hotels across the country which offered breakfast, including a self serve waffle maker. They all get messy. Every single one. To blame the hotel, staff and even the waffle maker for a guest's poor kitchen manners is ridiculous.

The daily room rate is high.

Keep in mind this is a family run hotel in a very small community. They do not have the occupancy year round to justify the expense of some amenities guests have become accustomed to in other parts of the country. It would be a nice touch though to make some of these amenities available temporarily during the high season.

Overall, A Riverside Inn is a clean and very welcome addition to the lodging choices in Fairplay. We will return.

We traveled with our children and my parents to Colorado for a family reunion. The trip started out fine. The hotel was ok nothing special....the "heated pool" was so cold that my children couldn't stay in it to swim for more than five minutes or so...they wanted to play in the hot tub because it was warmer. The continental breakfast was ok nothing great, the waffle maker made a big mess everytime you made a waffle they would stick to the maker, which made it difficult to get them out when they were done. We asked to have the conference room on the last night we were all together so we could visit and show a video of one of our family members during a military trip to Haiti. We asked for it for the entire evening and when we weren't there at 7:30 they gave it to someone else. Bad business in my opinion, you don't tell someone they can have something and because we were out to dinner and a little later than we anticipated then give it to someone else. Please tell me how when you have four people in a room that leaving 2 towels makes any sense. How are 4 people suppose to shower with 2 towels. The air conditioning was turned off every night around 11 pm and came back on somewhere between 5 and 6 am every morning, this made for uncomfortable sleeping. No air moving and stuffy, we were told that if the outside temperature was too low they wouldn't kick on....what a bunch of bull. The male that ran the desk was very rude and disrespectful and made several negative comments about our military personel serving our country once he found out that there was a military person in our group. He also made several negative comments about my female cousin and women in general. DO NOT STAY HERE! They are not nice and do not treat their customers with respect. Not much of a family reunion when the police show up and then my cousin and her family were asked to leave in the middle of the night with their 3 small children. Who does that to people......I certainly wouldn't be able to get by with treating people like that in my profession. I would be fired!!!

A couple of us are clean freaks, and we couldn't find a problem with this room - it was great. Beds are comfy. Mini fridge perfect temp. Pool fine. View from our lower level room beautiful. Front desk always helpful. Especially appreciated the restaurant recommendations.
