A Riverside Inn is a great little (50 rooms or so) hotel that we stay in every year during our visits to the Fairplay area. Derek (the owner) and his staff are very friendly and efficient. The rooms are clean and equipped with LCD flat-panel TVs. There is a computer w/ printer in the lobby with high-speed internet access. In addition, free WiFi is available throughout the hotel.
We had one little problem and it pains me to even mention it because everyone up there is so nice... On our second day there we needed some extra time to get ready so had to turn the maid away and asked her to come back later. She must have misunderstood (her first (only) language was Spanish) because she didn't come back that day, the next day or even the day after that. I mentioned it to the front desk several times and it only got corrected on the fourth day. In the meantime, though, they were apologetic and we got towels from the front desk.
If I could offer one suggestion to Derek, it would be this: Most hotels at this price point offer a hot breakfast with protein (i.e, eggs and meat). Holiday Inn Express, in particular, has figured out how to do this in an efficient, cost-effective way with pre-made frozen omelets, scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage with a menu that changes every day (e.g., bacon and eggs one day, omelet and sausage the next, etc.). It would be nice to see something like this or in the alternative, dirt cheap frozen Jimmy Dean omelets or breakfast sandwiches sold from a freezer behind the front desk. I realize friends/family members coming in and scalping free food is a potential problem but I think this could be controlled.
On a final note, I am skeptical of the slew of one-star reviews left by a number of members of the same family who clearly had some sort of confrontation/altercation with the staff. There has got to be more to that story than they are telling, because their accusations seem far-fetched and out of character for the owner and staff. One person, for example, claimed the owner told him he was "from Afghanistan" and was anti-American and anti-military, etc. That certainly wasn't the owner of *this* hotel, whose family hails from eastern Europe - sheesh, their last name is Kopunec - can you get any more Czech than that?
Overall I can wholeheartedly recommend this hotel and I'll be staying there yet again next summer.
