With every trip to Keystone or Breckenridge, we stop to visit Bill and his crew at Platte Ranch. They provide an exceptional, one-of-a-kind experience with extremely knowledgeable, cautious-yet-comforting staff, and absolutely no nose-to-tail riding, which I have since learned is actually safer. The setting is so peaceful! The ranch itself is practical, with a bent towards the historical.
On our first trip, we were three totally-inexperienced riders--we had taken touristy trail rides, but that's it! Our first trip with our six-year-old, horse-crazy daughter was educational, highly entertaining, and awe-inspiring, so much so that we returned two days later. Bill shares stories of the land and it's history, and with a lot of dry wit tossed in!
Now, my daughter is still horse crazy and a level 2-trained rider. She loves to come back to visit Bill, now a dear friend! A ride last year along the beaches and mountain range of St. Kitt's didn't compare to any of our Platte Ranch experiences!
. . . and we've yet to get to the setting! Riding through the valley, along (and through!) the running waters of the Platte River, up the mountainside through a high plains forest, and across the mountain plateau surrounded by six mountain ranges and a view of Pike's Peak is . . . breathtaking. We've seen teepee rings, the "Welcome Trail", grazing sheep, Indian Paint Brush . . . we've cantered and trotted the horses side-by-side. The resulting photos are Christmas card worthy!
Platte Ranch is on Hwy. 9 near Fairplay (think South Park!) and about a 45 minutes drive south of Breckenridge. The drive is stunning in itself!
