“Friendly hostel in great surroundings”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2013

Pentsland Hostel is located in a fantastic part of Auckland, it is walking distance to Mt Eden domain and has quick access to the centre of town and the airport.

The hostel has plenty of free parking if you have a car (useful for getting out & about around Auckland). The garden is an excellent place to hang out and meet people while the kitchen is well equipped and the TV room is a nice place to relax. There is also a very useful laundry.

The only annoyance is the lack of free WIFI but the daily cost is not too onerous and seems pretty standard for most hostels in NZ.

The reception staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about the local area, able to provide details on nearby shops, restaurants and the best bus routes to get around town.

Overall I would recommend Pentlands Hostel for anyone looking for a relaxed place to stay outside the centre of town but still close enough to easily visit all the main sights in Auckland.

It is not in the center but in a quite area in the mount Eden area. You need to take a bus to get somewhere. However there is a supermarket nearby and also some good (Asian) restaurants. The staff was very friendly.
When I was there a lot of people stayed for a long time in the hostel because they were working in Auckland. This was not very good for the hostel vibe as they were busy with their own things. Did not stay there for a long time as Auckland is not attractive for a tourist.

First of all I don't know why this is called a Bed and Breakfast because they certainly don't do breakfast here. :/

This is a lovely backpackers located near Mt. Eden. Location wise it's very close to the train station and bus stop with very cheap fares for getting into the city. If you like walking it's also not too far to just walk to the city center. A large super market is also about a 5 minute walk down the road. The backpackers is clean for the most part and has some of the best bathroom facilities I have seen in a hostel. The noise level at night is also pretty good. The only noise that will disturb you is that of any fellow guests coming and going in the middle of the night. Pretty good considering how close you are to Auckland central. This is probably one of the best places to stay in Auckland.

However it's run sooooo poorly! I have worked in a NZ hostel for 4 months and I could have single handedly run this hostel better than the staff. They are constantly overbooking rooms and then will charge you $20 per person per night to sleep in your van outside. I have personally been screwed around with them and had to pay $30 for a room that I did not want while working for "free" accommodation there. It's amazing how many guests have been sitting and complaining about the management of the place. Even if your room hasn't been overbooked when you check in, just be prepared for the possibility of having to move rooms for random reasons. I knew a couple that were separated and when they slept in the same bed together the staff told them they couldn't do that, but they also weren't going to be put in the same room. It wasn't until they overbooked the guy's bed that they turned around and told him he had to share a bed with his girlfriend in her room so they could use his space. The next day when he asked for his bed back (That he paid for!) they had forgotten about him and booked his bed again! I won't go into everything that went on, but it was stuff like that happening daily.
Reception itself seems to be closed more often then open... I don't know what is up with that! The staff also don't really treat their cleaners very well and don't make the effort to remember their names. I couldn't help but feel like I was a burden to the staff whenever I had a question to ask! As a quick note the locks could all use changing or oiling as they're such a pain to open to get to your room!

It's a great place to stay for a night maybe two at most, but if you're looking to stay longer you'll start to dig under the surface and discover these annoying faults. Hopefully if you stay here you will be lucky and stay in the same bed for the duration of your stay!

Stayed at the hostel for a couple of weeks and despite it being in a very good location and having very nice facilities if you spend longer than a couple of nights you might see the crack appear. The staff seem lovely and friendly when you first arrive but their incompetence will soon shine through.

They messed up our booking when we arrived. We had to change rooms a couple of times due to them over booking the hostel. But we weren't the only ones. Speaking to some of the other guests i heard many stories of people having to move rooms. Long term guests being double booked. We knew a couple who were told they weren't allowed to share a bed while being in a dorm room then the hostel double booked one of their beds so asked them to share a bed.

On the first day we were there we witnessed in the middle of the kitchen an argument between one of the receptionists and a cleaner. The cleaner then quit on the spot and stormed off. Also there is meant to be a noise curfew at 10pm but nobody actually seems to be there to enforce it. I could go on about more issues but i haven't got all day.

As i said at the top. Nice place if you're just staying for a night or two (but ring before you arrive make sure they haven't double booked) If you plan to stay in Auckland longer, stay somewhere else.

I don't have anything bad to say about Pentlands.
We loved this cosy, comfortable and friendly backpackers.
Pentlands is a backpackers converted from two large colonial houses, in a beautiful, quiet, leafy suburb called Mt Eden.
We travelled as a couple, and we stayed in a double room for 2 nights. The room was big, immaculate and had a great view. Countdown supermarket is 10 min walk away and Mt Eden is 15 min walk away, allow half an hour to walk up, worth it for the views.
The bathrooms are always clean and I think there was 5 of them, each with a toilet, shower and sink, so no moving around with your stuff. We saw the staff cleaning them several times a day.
The kitchen was large, functional with all appliances and a dining area.
There was also a large lounge with about 5 comfy sofas and a large LCD tv. The kitchen, dining area and lounge are open and accessible all day and night which is really good.
There is an outdoor courtyard with decking and a peaceful garden. This area is open all day and during the evening until 10pm, then the manager asks guests to keep the noise down because of the neighbours.
In my opinion I would say to ignore the negative reviews on here regarding management shouting at guests to keep the noise down, whilst we were there, most travelers were younger than us and were having a few beers and talking but it was quite loud, so the manager came in and said now its after 10, you have to keep the noise down please. This is simply because its in a residential street surrounded by other properties and Pentlands have to respect their right to not be disturbed by the backpackers. If you want to party and get blind, then go to Nomads or Base but i would pick this place over them, everytime.
Kate, one of the managers has to be commended, she is amazingly helpful and she went above and beyond, to help us out with a little problem we had. We are very thankful for your advice on NZ too.
Brilliant rates, very cheap for a great environment, so excellent value for money.
The only reason we had to leave was because they were fully booked. We would go back now if we could, love the backpackers, love the suburb :)
Definately would stay again, would most definately recommend it.
This place deserves a much higher ranking on Trip Advisor :)

After staying in a not so nice backpackers in the city this was a refreshing change and great location. The double room that we had was clean, had plenty of space and a great view.

The whole atmosphere was very chilled out and all the other guests were very friendly, including a very helpful couple from Finland.
The location of this backpackers is ideal if you don't want the party all night kind of place but can still have a few beers chatting with people of many nationalities.
A special mention goes to Kate the duty manager who went above and beyond for us when we ran into trouble.

I would recommend this place to anyone, the bathroom areas are very clean, plenty of space in the kitchen and the tv room is huge!

Stayed here for 2 nights in a single room to find my feet and get over jet lag. A nice, clean place. Could do with a little cosmetic make over (a lick of paint). Very happy staying here, nice ad quiet and the staff were very helpful. Wifi is a little expensive and the video library could do with an update but other wise would highly recommend!
