“Great value in downtown Durango”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012 via mobile

Stayed two nights. Very friendly check in. Had king room on first floor with a balcony overlooking 5th street. Room and bathroom were very clean.
Very close to all the downtown bars and restaurants.
Used pool a couple of times. On the small side but well kept.
Basic continental breakfast served in reception. A bit crowded with limited selection and no cereals.
Car park a bit small but did not use car as the trolley and bus service got us where we needed to go.
The Durango Lodge is the perfect spot for an economical stay in Durango.

When you pull up you will think, hum? Go inside. It's very clean, the attendants are very friendly and knowledgeble. It's a short block walk away from the Silverton Train. Because the parking lot is small - and to not lose our space we left the car parked and walked all over town. Everything is within walking distance and I'm not one to walk much. We had a balcony, but were so busy didn't have time to sit out. Great suggestions for dinner - Randy's (the best calimari I've ever had), Ken & Sue's - excelent desserts, and the diner in the middle of town for breakfast. Hot tub was clean and hot. Pool was too cold for me. A large refrigerator. Very good variety of free continental breakfast items. We often come up in the winter for skiing and stay at the Strater. I will stay at Durango Lodge from now on and spend the extra money on me.

Beware!! After check-in, we were getting ready to have an early nap. The thermostat for the room is close to the door and we were trying to adjust it down.
The light was dim and we were struggling to see the numbers. As someone opened our door with a key we both turned toward the door. My husband does not wear PJ's for sleeping. Needless to say, the "full Monte" happened and a scream rang out from the other person.
No apology for the intrusion by management. Their continental breakfast was very minimal.
The main attraction is that the motel is very close for walking to most of the good bars and resturants. We did enjoy the melodrama theatre offering of "Two Orphans". Great fun hissing the Villain and cheering the Hero.

Read lots of reviews before deciding on a place to stay. Their website indicated that we could not stay consecutive nights in the same size room, but when I called the lodge there was availability for a room. We pulled right into the parking spot by our door and did not have to drive our car for the next few days. The Silverton-Durango train, outdoor adventures, shopping, and restaurants were all within walking distance. Our room was extremely clean and quiet. Small swimming pool and hot tub are located by the office. The breakfast selection is minimal: fresh donuts, bagels, muffins, bread, juice, and coffee (no milk). There is an eclectic restaurant two doors down if you want something more to eat. For the location, cleanliness, and price I'd highly recommend the Durango Lodge!

Room Tip: Call the office to check on availability of rooms.

The exterior is not particularly impressive – the landscaping consists of the parking lot – but the rooms are really quite nice. Mine had a balcony, which looked out on a fairly boring street – BUT it also looked out on the amazing mountains around Durango, and the sky where you could watch those Rocky Mountain thunderstorms form.

It’s very close to the train depot, which most people would consider a plus, but that means in the morning (8 to 9-ish) and the evening (roughly 5 to 7) you have a lot of train whistling going on. It didn’t bother me at all at those hours. It’s also within easy walking distance of most of the downtown restaurants and shops, and a short walk to the paved walking/bike path along the river. Downtown Durango can be pretty pricey so I thought their $115 rate was excellent.

No elevator, no guest computer. The continental breakfast was OK but minimal (bagels/toast/donuts/OJ/coffee), and there’s very little space to eat it in (just a small counter in the lobby).

Room Tip: Avoid the first floor on the north side of hotel - windows basically look out at people's feet o...
