This used to be our favorite hotel in Durango... but they seem to be letting themselves go a bit. The room was one we've stayed in before (we've stayed here for 4 years in a row). The room is still nice and faced the main street. But, the phone did not work and they knew this when we checked in but did not tell us... we had to walk downstairs (or take the elevator or use our cell phone) whenever we had a question for the hotel staff. The weekend was especially warm and the air conditioning has not been updated to accommodate this kind of weather so we and our friends had to leave our windows open. But since all of our rooms faced main street the noise from the bars and bikers went on most of the night and no one got much sleep. The really bad part was that we had convinced our friends to pay the extra to stay here... and so we were disappointed that they did not enjoy their stay and we regretted talking them into staying here...

However, they still serve a nice continental breakfast and had made our dinner reservations for us. We'd still recommend this hotel but with reservations and a suggestion that you only stay here when there is nothing going on in town (like we experienced) and the weather is cooler.

It is conveniently located right next to the train station and the Cold Stone ice creamery is right across the street... we'd also recommend that you have dinner at the Red Snapper which is walking distance to this hotel... great food!

Dear "BeckyBAG"
Thank you for your review, I do take each review very seriously and are working on updating the heating and A/C in the main building this year. We accomplished the update in the Palace
Wing portion last year. I agree Labor Day weekend here in Durango can be a bit overwhelming.
Thank you, again, Paula

Very friendly staff! All of the ladies at the front desk were so friendly and helpful with things to do and places to eat. Beautiful antiques with all of the modern updates (bathroom and shower & tub). We stayed on the 3rd floor in the back and got to see and hear the train which is wonderful. Great location, we could walk just about everywhere. We will absolutely stay again!

Four us spent 4 nights at the General Palmer. We loved the location especially since we were right next to the train station. We were in the older section of the hotel and stayed in room 251 and 252 which opened up to a nice deck along with two other rooms which worked well with the 4 of us. Even though it was above a restaurant and next to the train station it was not too noisy. It was very easy to walk to the nice restaurants in town. I would definitely recommend the General Palmer.

We had a problem when we first checked in! They had put us in "the annex" over the carpark, which us The Palace! When you book, be sure to mention, uou want to st a y in The he General Palmer! They sorted our room the next day into The General Palmer! We were very impressed with the service and quality of both the staff and hotel! Very home from home, including delivering your chosen breakfast to your room, at which time you would require.

Room Tip: We had a lovely room overlooking The station! Plenty of windows and fresh air!

We loved our two-night stay at the General Palmer earlier this month. The hotel is very centrally located right on the main street of Durango. Our room on the third floor had three windows that overlooked the street, but it was not too noisy. The beds were very comfortable and the room was nicely furnished, if a bit small, which is to be expected in an older hotel.

I cannot say enough about the service, especially Colin. The A/C broke in our room the second evening. We returned from a busy day of a jeep tour and train ride back from Silverton to find our room unbearably hot. Without missing a beat, they offered to move us to another room downstairs and were so apologetic. We were very thankful to sleep in a cool and comfortable room after an exhausting day.

We hope to return to Durango again one day and we will definitely be staying here.

Dear "blue_gal4011"
Thank you for reviewing the General Palmer hotel, we appreciate it very much. Colin has been one of my most outstanding young men to work here at the hotel. So thoughtful and kind, I showed him your review and you should have seen his smile.

Located adjacent to the Durango Silverton RR. We stayed In the annex building which was wonderful. Rooms and bathrooms were average size but well appointed and with modern amenities . We thought that the rooms would be noisy since above the restaurant, but no problem. Rooms 251-254 have a large deck which we took advantage of every afternoon for wine and train watching. Beds are really comfortable.
Complimentary breakfast was nothing special, but several good restaurants within walking distance. We would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: 251-254 if you want the large deck
