We were on our honeymoon and decided to try river rafting as it was our first try. We were nervous because we normally don't do things like that but very glad we did it because it was a lot of fun! Our tour Guide Doug was awesome. He made it safe and exciting at the same time! He was very knowledgeable, friendly, and enjoys what he does so it made it all the better. I would recommend Doug as your tour guide and this rafting company as well because we had an all around good experience. And oh yeah, request Atlas the dog to go with! We had fun with him as he is the most gentle and smart dog! He also seems to sense if you get nervous and he will sit by you to calm you. Haha.

Atlas said you spoke too much of Doug and not enough about him:) Please check out his online video profile linked from our home page created by Outside Magazine, woof!

I went with a group of friends to the Salt River for some rafting. Our guide, Bama, worked with Mountain Waters Rafting and was our guide for that trip. He was extremely knowledgeable and even explained why he was doing the things he was doing so that we understood what was going on. At lunch time, he was practically a waiter to our group; grabbing food, clearing dishes. If you do any trip, ask for him, you won't regret it. He even pointed out awesome geological features along the route.

Bama is pretty much the quintessential guide and an archetype as well. Where did this guy come from? We sure are glad to have him, thanks for writing.

Grandpa and the two teenage grandkids went for a half day trip. Just watching their smiles when they came back to the hotels to me, it was worthwhile. I made reservations late the day before, and ecstatic they could accommodate at such short notice. We have done this trip many times with other companies, but I guarantee Mountain Waters is the best!

My wife, 2 teenage sons, and I took the day-long rafting trip Needleton stretch on the upper Animas river in mid-June. We arrived the day before for the orientation in Durango. The staff took this very seriously, and the short orientation "rapids swimming test" was a better rafting trip than some complete day trips we have done! The next morning we loaded the train and rode it up along the Animas for a couple hours before unloading in the middle of nowhere. The train stops, they throw the deflated rafts, gear, food, and everything out of the cargo car of the train, and the train is gone in about 30 seconds. Excellent. We had lunch, got in the rafts, and left. NO LEISURELY FLOAT DOWN THE RIVER HERE! We were in good rapids within seconds of launching, and it did not stop until the trip was done. The guides were wonderful, experienced, and a first-rate professional safety Kayak guide went down the river with the group of 3 rafts. We had a great time and were very satisfied with the trip. It was a bit expensive, but was a first-class experience with lots of excitement. I would definitely go back.

Thank you John, we too feel the Upper Animas is one of the best raft trips ever and we too wish we could charge less, but that historic 1880's steam train raft shuttle gets a big chunk of the ticket price. The way I look at it is that all those folks riding the train are engaged in the highlight of their day, whereas the lucky few, you and your family, are simply riding the train to experience the highlight of your vacation!
