Owner description: Hop aboard a coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive that travels along the same railroad tracks that miners, cowboys and the early settlers of the Old West used over a hundred years ago. The route winds in and out of canyons and past open wilderness affording great views. The price of a ticket also includes admission to the D&SNGRR Museum and the Silverton Freight Yard Museum.

Everyone should do this at least once!!!! Took grandchildren found that grandson had elavation sickness we tried two different times for him to make trip could not do it. They refunded our money for one adult and child for a small fee because of his sickness. Staff was great!!!!

We took the Open Gondola seating as it cost the least and was recommended by the girl I made the reservations with (she said when she and her friends that are employees do it they use those seats!) and I don't regret it! We are a family of 6 and we wanted everyone to be able to see out during the ride-the Gondola seating you are on a bench facing out as opposed to the other (more expensive) seats where it's bus style (only the window seat has a good view)....
Gorgeous views, friendly staff and an overall fun experience! Wear safety style goggles though! Cinders from the actual coal powered engine fly! My hubby got one in his eye-again, the conductor was super nice and gave us eye wash and kept checking back with him and even told him who to see in Silverton if we needed it!
My ONLY complaint? Not enough time in Silverton!

We like to take a train ride whenever possible on our vacation trips. This was definitely the longest and most impressive we have ever had. We rode the Prospector Car but probably should have rode the open top car. Our guide Heather was very informative and helpful. Three stops for water, this is the real thing. The track bed is in terrible shape so we bounced all over the place. Yes it isn't cheap, but it is 9 hours--so it still is a deal. The other end is Silverton which is also quite neat. A real must see if you like trains, mountains, and raging rapids.

Staffed by volunteers with no entrance fee (donations appreciated) the museum is large with loads of wonderful memorabilia and some wonderful old railroad stock. Great place.
