Owner description: Hop aboard a coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive that travels along the same railroad tracks that miners, cowboys and the early settlers of the Old West used over a hundred years ago. The route winds in and out of canyons and past open wilderness affording great views. The price of a ticket also includes admission to the D&SNGRR Museum and the Silverton Freight Yard Museum.

Went on this train ride as part of our honeymoon visit to Colorado. There is amazing views in the fall. There was snow on the peaks of the mountains and it was so beautiful. We drove an extra 4 hours just to ride the train and I have to say it was well worth it. The price we paid was also worth it. If you go during fall take some extra layers of clothes and sit in the open car. You wont be disappointed. Oh, and don't forget your camera!

Absolutely loved our train ride to Silverton and back. It was so neat being on this railroad. Views are spectacular!! Get your seat on the right side of the train leaving Durango for the best views. Animas River was at an extremely low level due to drought in 2012. I'm sure this ride is even more amazing when the river is at its normal level.

My sister, husband and I spent a Sunday making the roundtrip to Silverton and LOVED it. We booked a table in the coach car (Ponderosa?) and it was well worth the extra fee. Our coaches' guide Ellie, who is a geologist, not only kept us set up with her special cafe mochas, but was able to give us a wonderful tutorial about formation of the geology of the area, and to point out examples of different rock formations. She also alerted us to spectacular photo-ops that were about to come around the bend. We spotted a porcupine and a cayote from our windows. There is an option of getting a bus ride return, instead of the train, but we loved coming back to Durango by rail, since you get to see the beautiful gorge in reverse. When you see the huge amount of manpower needed to maintain and staff this railway, plus the big amount of coal it takes to fuel one trip to Silverton, it is remarkable that they can keep the prices so low. So support the railroad by buying the book and DVD, we really loved them.

May 6, 2013. My husband, sister and I took the trip on what turned out to be a really nasty day. Rainy and cold. We rode in the Silver Vista car. All open. Very cold! But our attendant, Bob, managed to make it a great trip! Of course the views were awesome but Bob was so knowledgeable! He was entertaining as well. He provided us with as many blankets as we wanted and was always available and ready with hot drinks! The railroad had also provided a warm and cozy car for those who didn't want to be in the open air the entire trip. Unexpected and wonderful! We rode inside on the trip back! Would recommend this trip as a "must do" when in Durango!

Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Train is an all day adventure that will wow you. Climbing from 6,500 ft in Durango to 9,300 ft in Silverton, it winds along the Animas River, with spectacular scenery and and breathtaking views. Don't miss this historic train ride. The museum is very nice as well, some awesome restored railroad cars and lots of history.
