Owner description: Hop aboard a coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive that travels along the same railroad tracks that miners, cowboys and the early settlers of the Old West used over a hundred years ago. The route winds in and out of canyons and past open wilderness affording great views. The price of a ticket also includes admission to the D&SNGRR Museum and the Silverton Freight Yard Museum.

The museum at Durango features an impressive and very large exhibit of railroad artifacts, photos, and other items of interest. Very cool museum. Would love to go back and ride the train sometime.

If you love trains you will love the railroad museum in Durango.

We took our daughter and she had a great time looking at the trains. There was even a caboose inside that you were allowed to enter. Our daughter thought that was especially cool. A museum that let's you crawl on the exhibit.

The museum is located behind the Durango train depot and it's not always open, so check before you go. Also, when we went there was no cost of admission.

Check out downtown Durango and begin or end your walk at the train museum.

The railroad offers a buy one get one ride on the train in the off-season but it's only open for couples or more. I wrote them an email and asked if I showed up alone would I get some kind of a discount? Most businesses would make some kind of concession for a single customer as a good business practice. But this railroad will not. When I told them that I would write a review for trip adviser they then offered me a locals rate as an appeasement. But anyone else showing up as a single customer wouldn't necessarily get the same offer so I declined. They said it was a business practice designed to attract a bigger clientele. They can still offer the same buy one get one but they could also make an adjustment for someone who shows up by themselves. Their refusal to accommodate me as a single is why I'm writing this review. I also asked how they would handle three people showing up? Do two get the deal and the third not? They didn't answer.

DSNGRR, Guest Relations Manager at Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and Museum, responded to this reviewResponded February 14, 2013

We offer different promotions throughout the year trying to cover many types of people (locals, military, families etc) with no intent to impose a penalty on anyone who doesn’t fit the demographics of a current promotion. We pride ourselves on our customer service and extended to you an offer for a $20 ticket, an even better savings than the 2 for 1 offer. We also responded to your Facebook post that you could have purchased the 2 for 1 tickets and used the second ticket to ride again on another date. We apologize for the perception that you are being penalized and hope you take another opportunity to experience the D&SNGRR. Please watch our Hot Deals page for when we have a promotion or discount you might be interested in using.

The staff are actually performers in the way they participate in the story and engage the travelers during this magical train ride.

We did this with family 2 summers ago. Beautiful. I would go back. Only thing is make your reservation early since it does fill up. Also, if you sit in outside car, just realize you will get dirty (black soot). The kids all loved from 3 years to 12 years. Well worth it. Silverton is a cute town, but not a lot there, plus you don't have too much time to do more than eat and browse.
