I loved the history and all the antiques and train memorable. The staff loved answering questions and were very knowledgeable. It is free and I say, don't miss it!

We decided to splurge and get tickets on the Presidential car, since this was a once in a lifetime trip. So glad we did! The scenery was fantastic and the Aspens were turning gold. Really loved the experience!

We loved every minute the trip from Durango to Silverton and back!
I would highly recommend this to everyone! The views are spectacular! The guide in our car was fun and informative. Silverton was very interesting and we enjoyed having lunch at Avalanche Cafe. If you travel to Durango Do NOT miss this great ride!

one of the last remaining sections of a vast network of narrow gauge railroads in colorado the durango and silverton is highly recommended for an authentic glimpse of the past. after leaving durango following the highway much of the journey is through the beautiful animas river canyon, with north of rockwood a spectacular section 'the high line' as the train hugs a narrow shelf above the river far below. dont expect a fast journey, this is a slow meander all the more enjoyable if the weather is kind, which it was for us. the train has various classes of coach, we sat in 'basic' and it was fine. pre booking is strongly advised especially in high season as they only run 2-3 trains per day, out from durango in the morning, returning from silverton in the afternoon but with plenty of time for lunch and souveniers in between

We took the open carriage there and back and wouldn't have had it any other way. The soot and cinders are a problem and can even clog your camera equipment but don;t let that put you off if you are a railway enthusiast. It is a long day so be prepared. It is an OLD steam train so it goes at Old fashioned speeds. The train started a few fires and we had to wait until they were extinguished before we could continue back down to Durango. We also had a great day, quite hot and sunny which was wonderful. The views are remarkable and the line itself is a feat of engineering to marvel at. Perhaps take an inside carriage on the way up as the soot is at its worst when the engine is straining and stay outside on the way back! Or.. do like we did and head for the shower and the laundromat as soon as you return. Enjoy... we did.
