Serious Texas Bar-B-Q was seriously delicious! We were staying just down the street from this location and wanted something that wasn’t a chain restaurant. We ended up eating here two nights in a row!

The parking lot was small but as we entered the building we thought we might have found the right place. There was a line, which is often a sign that the food is well-liked. While waiting I noticed that they had a number of bottles of beer, etc., chilling next to us in line, a selection of house-made sauces and rubs, and there was a refrigerator/freezer that had some chilled sides and some ice cream. The line moved quickly. They offered ribs and sandwiches, among other things, or you could have the meat by itself served on butcher paper.

They also had specials for the days of the week. The first night we were there was taco night and the next night (Wednesday) was “Tater” or baked potato night. I didn’t see any tacos ordered on Tuesday but Wednesday’s baked potatoes were very popular and looked huge and covered with pulled pork, steaming hot queso, and other toppings.

The establishment serves Coke products, including Mello Yello and Diet Dr. Pepper (our choices), in the drink dispenser; do-it-yourself and free refills.

The staff that took and prepared our order was very friendly and helpful. They also had a good rapport with one another; making it enjoyable to watch. They moved quickly to prepare our order and asked if we wanted the pickles and onions on our brisket and whether we wanted to eat there or have it to-go. If you eat on site you’ll bus your own table and use the Serious Texas Trash containers to dispose of any debris.

Both nights we had the brisket sandwich, which was fabulous!!! If we had been in town longer I would have tried other things. But, once tried, I couldn’t stray from the brisket. I love moist meat and this was definitely moist. The sandwich came wrapped in butcher paper with a toothpick stuck through the middle to hold it together. There was so much thick, juicy, sliced brisket meat that it hardly could stay between the sesame seed covered bun. The meat had a blackened edge that was a bit firmer, smokier, and oh so delicious. The interior of the slices were not firm and were easy to bite through without pulling a whole piece of meat out of the bun. The meat did have some fatty portions that I found to be easy to remove if I didn’t wish to consume them. The flavor was incredible without added sauce, but I also really enjoy bbq sauce and decided to give it a go. The sauce, while thin, does a good job of adding flavor to the sandwich. It tasted like a vinegar-based sauce with a touch of sweetness, very nice. The first night, we also tried the cheesy potatoes as our side. They were okay, but not overly flavorful and really not necessary as the sandwich was quite sizable.

The décor was rustic and kind-of funky with lots of wood and metal; old tin signs, and wooden picnic tables outside that had metal tops. The tables had a roll of paper towels and a huge bottle of Serious Texas Bar-B-Q Sauce. Utensils, condiments and such are available inside near the drinks. Go check those out before sitting down. The sauce was very thin in consistency but the bottles have a cap that prevents it from running too fast. We sat outside both nights and thoroughly enjoyed the gentle breeze, the stars, and the hanging plants around the deck.

According to their website there are currently only 5 locations: 2 in Durango, 1 in Fort Collins, 1 in Loveland, and 1 in Farmington, New Mexico. The Durango location we enjoyed was 3535 North Main Avenue and their hours are 10:30 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. in summer, and 10:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. in winter.

I wish we lived closer, what a great place!

This place was close to our hotel and we were tired and wanted something fast. This fit that bill. And that's about it. The food was just so-so.

The food tasted very good. I got the pulled pork sandwhich that won first place in Regis and Kelly's Grill-Off. The restaurant itself was kind of loud and very, very casual....just like you might think a b-b-q would be.
