“An Amazing Stay”
Reviewed June 8, 2009

Well we went to Dunton Hot Springs for our honeymoon, and it was definatly the right place to go and be alone with the one you love. We booked the Romantic getaway with the well house. It was absolutly amazing just being there and relaxing. Everyone was very friendly and willing to help us with anything we needed. and the view from our cabin every morning was priceless. If you are looking for that perfect hide-a-way this is the place for you! they take very good care of you and you can very easily loose yourself in the beautiful surroundings.

We travel a lot for business and recreation and we prefer high-end luxury accommodations. We booked the relaxation / spa package over three nights and took our 4 year old along. The staff was very helpful and friendly and the location is tucked away high in the mountains. Be aware that given the elevation you might need a period to acclimatize i.e. you might have initial trouble sleeping. In summary what makes this place unique is that you have the wonderful hot springs with cabins that have been renovated with lots of attention to detail in a very natural environment. In addition due to guests eating at the same table you will have an opportunity to meet great and well-travelled people and have interesting conversation. The cook is a nice character and the food is good but not outstanding. It follows the lodge / eco tourism concept that you'd find in lots of part of Africa. As to luxury vs. price there are other places in the continental US that will give you a much better deal with a higher level of luxury - specifically Amangani (the DHS owner is also an investor in the Aman resorts) in Jackson Hole and Robert Redford's Sundance in Utah which is similar in setup to DHS. Again the stay was good - also with kids - and the DHS management and staff outstanding but if you are looking for high-end luxury (with your own TV in your room) I would recommend comparing prices and locations.

OK-- so your honeymoon can & should be amazing anywhere, right? Yep-- if you honeymoon in Dunton Hot Springs! Just think of just melting away together... not having to listen to other people's conversation, not having to even know what time it is or what day of the week it is... just to be alone, together in your very only sliver of the world. That's Dunton Hot Springs.. an old ghost town lovingly restored in the most amazing & comfortable luxe style, nestled perfectly in a valley in the San Juan Mountains (*think breath-taking views, awesome activities, & amazing climate!)
My husband found Dunton Hot Springs when checking locations in Colorado for the perfect place to relax after our destination wedding in Central Colorado. He found DHS & knew right away it was the place. We both agreed & went forward with booking. We soon discovered the elegant private cabins, and all the amenities available sure to make this the perfect hideaway for our honeymoon.
We arrived late at night on our check in day thanks to a snow storm or two, but were greeted at our car w/ smiles by the incredible staff. They had a light dinner prepared & waiting for us. They helped us relax, got us some wine & we enjoyed one of our favorite dinners: a quinoa salad w/ grilled salmon & vegetables. The rest of the week unfolded just as perfectly. In fact, we lucked out & had the whole town to ourselves for our whole week which made it even more romantic for us. Chefs Dennis & George accommodated our peskitarian palates.. creating wonderful & fresh fish & veg dishes for every meal. We were always blown away by how nice everyone was! ;) Francoise was our waiter for most of the week & he was so sweet & always on top of our every whim. This staff is totally into letting you relax & enjoy your privacy. We had so much fun! There's an incredible list of activities available-- snow shoeing, cross country skiing, massage & spa treatments, a fitness & boxing room, yoga/pilates classes... and more! In the summer there's a whole new host of activities including backpacking, hiking & horseback riding. We can't wait to go back to see our friends in Dunton for another beautiful season!

Consider going in the off-season after the holidays. Picturesque and lovely, with fresh snowfall nearly every day--you might even be, as I was, the only guest for a night or two. It doesn't get much better than that. Chef Dennis made me home made donuts for breakfast one morning! In between lavish meals, I wiled away the hours napping, bathing in the hot springs, or reading in the library. I have mixed feelings in sharing my experience--a part of me wants to keep this is the best-kept secret in Colorado.

My wife and I spent our first wedding anniversary at Dunton Hot Springs this September. It could not have been a more perfect way to celebrate our first year of marriage. We stayed in the Well House, and after touring several of the other cabins we were certainly happy with our choice. Having the huge tub which filled directly from the source of the hot springs right there in the room was fantastic, though we also soaked in Bathhouse every day.

Dunton's location is beautiful. Isolated, quiet, with amazing views and great hiking. We were mostly content to spend our days relaxing at the lodge and enjoying the phenomenal hospitality provided by the staff.

Meals were excellent and the staff are more than happy to cater to specific needs and requirements. While we were hesitant at first about the communal meals served in the Saloon, we had no reason to be. It was very enjoyable to meet and dine with the other guests, and share good conversation over great food and wines.

The variety of cabins and the incredibly accommodating nature of the staff mean that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Dunton to a wide variety of visitors. It is certainly a great romantic getaway, but it could also be a brilliant family vacation. Our first night there were a family of four staying in one of the cabins, and while they would have been more than welcome to dine with the rest of the guests they chose to dine in an adjoining room to avoid disruptions from their young children.

While Dunton has great luxurious amenities, the old western ghost town also lends itself well to a casual atmosphere, there was nothing stuffy or uncomfortable about our stay, just great and friendly service.

We are very thankful that the amazing staff contributed to making our stay a truly great vacation. It was great to be able to sit and share a beer with the managers before dinner and be treated more like a member of a loving family than a distant hotel guest.

  • Liked — It is too hard to pick one thing, but the hospitality of the staff stands out in my mind.
  • Disliked — There is nothing I would change.

The resort looks like a ghost town but the interiors are luxurious and well kept.

The dinner, served family style at a sinlge long table, was excellent - Kobe beef. The breakfast was also excellent - even the buffet plates were hot so the omelet would not chill too quickly.

The spa was wonderful -a hot pool and a cold plunge pool, with an open fireplace.

If you can afford it and if you like outdoor activities the place is a dream.

Sonia was extreemly helpful booking our trip by email and phone. We were able to get the majority of our questions answered almost immediately. We enjoyed the staff and the location is inspiring. It is set away from almost every contact with the outside world. We drove in - you will need an off road vehicle or four wheel drive vehicle to feel comfortable on your arrival. You need to experience the fly fishing even if you don't usually fish. Our guide Dan - was incredibly patient and very helpful - made some wonderful memories for us. The food is excellent. This place is Dog Friendly - made our trip even more incredible to share it with our dog Fralo. He enjoyed it almost more then we did. We heard the horseback riding was wonderful becuase of the views experienced on the ride. We traveled in October when the leaves were changing.
