“Awesome movies and great atmosphere”

Landmark's Mayan Theatre
Reviewed November 25, 2012

This movie theater is perfect for catching lower budget movies your excited about, artsy movies and documentaries. I must mention that there was one occasion where the air conditioning wasn't working during a movie, but this was a rare incident and they offered a refund and refreshments to people. It got pretty hot, but the good thing is there is a bar and we were able to take our refresh ourselves... Even after that experience I am giving them a very good rating because I understand that things like this happen and especially at older buildings like this. It is important to me to support smaller films that would be playing at the Mayan and to support a place with such a cool atmosphere. The walls in the theater are decorated in Mayan style art and the bar allows for a more relaxing movie experience. It is not to expensive either. I hope you get a chance to see a movie at the Mayan someday soon.

The Mayan theater is a Denver treasure. The building itself is an experience and they bring in great indie and foreign films.

Where else do you get Art Deco meets ancient, extinct civilization design? And their popcorn is the best IMHO. Great arthouse movies, awesome popcorn, mixed drinks, displaced hipsters. What more could a movie geek want?

The place is definitely "historic" in some of its features - like the closet-sized restroom with a urinal viewed from the popcorn line in the lobby - but go immediately to the Mayan if you've never been there before. Don't wait and look up movies - get down there now! It's worth it and if you don't like the movie - get a drink or even a shot of tequila and wash your cares away. A local treasure for sure!

If you've not enjoyed eclectic cinema while sipping Das Bog coffee or Mighty Leaf tea, munching a pastry or popcorn in this landmark movie house, you've missed a very special Denver movie experience. A regular favorite for many, now better for the new seats.
