Owner description: Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art is temporarily closed to expand our universe! The museum’s new building, located at 12th Avenue and Bannock Street and expected to open in early 2018, will offer visitors an enhanced experience with approximately 65% more display space while staying true to the salon style and intimate atmosphere for which the Kirkland is known. The museum’s three collections are: • International Decorative Art—A celebrated collection including notable examples of every major design period from Arts & Crafts to Postmodern. • Colorado & Regional Art—The largest repository of art showcasing the state and region’s talent, concentrating on the 1850s through the 1990s with about 7,000 works more than 700 artists. • Vance Kirkland Retrospective—Kirkland (1904–1981) is generally considered Colorado’s most distinguished modern painter. About 550 paintings and about 600 drawings and prints are held in his estate collection. Central to the move, Vance Kirkland’s art school & studio building (built 1910–1911 for Henry Read's Students' School of Art) was relocated to Bannock Street and oriented in the same direction. In a feat of engineering, the 1,384 square foot building was detached from the existing museum, moved eight blocks west and placed on the north side of the new museum on November 6, 2016.

“Small building, packed to overflowing”

I love this small museum! I had never heard of Vance Kirkland before visiting here, but it turns out I really like his style, colors and overall paintings. But it isn't just about his work: the museum is packed with furniture, textiles, sculptures, everyday stuff. You can stand in one spot for 15 minutes and still need more time to look at everything. I can't remember how often there are guided tours, but that was definitely value-added. The entrance fee at first seems a little pricey, but I felt it was worth it. Once you're done here, you can head down a few blocks to the DAM (Denver Art Museum) and check out the Kirkland collection there.

“Cool stuff”

We stumbled upon this while we were waiting to get a seat at Jelly across the street. This place as some really interesting works and we enjoyed seeing how he hung from the ceiling to do many of his paintings. A great museum with a lot of character.

We visited on a rainy day and thoroughly enjoyed the 1:30 PM tour (Wed-Sat). The tour made the trip, otherwise I would have missed a lot of detailed information.

“Fantastic collection”
Reviewed August 4, 2014

We were especially interested in the furniture and items from the Arts and Craft period and Art Deco. The number of items on display was overwhelming. One of the best we have seen including Paris and New York. Well displayed and great lighting to show off the pieces. We were not that interested in the Kirkland paintings, but did enjoy learning about him.

WOW, so many cool pieces in this collection. MUST SEE if you love Art Deco or mid century modern furniture. I loved every inch of this little museum. Mr. Kirkland's paintings are unique and interesting.
