For most of the 20 years that my husband and I have been married either we made Thanksgiving dinner or visited family for the holiday. This year we decided to try a Denver restaurant and avoid all those excessive (but delicious) leftover calories.

We made reservations at Simms Steakhouse, which sits high on a hill overlooking the Denver skyline. The reviews for their legendary Thanksgiving buffet were pretty good. It was a disaster. Within ten minutes of being seated, I had lodged a complaint with the hostess and our server. A few minutes thereafter, the manager was down on bended knee by our table apologizing profusely. He was clearly overwhelmed and told us we would pay for nothing.

We were starving and had to find another restaurant on the fly. It was 7:15 pm.

We dialed a few more numbers without luck. Finally we tried the Rodizio Grill in LoDo on Wynkoop Street. If you think Thanksgiving is a major grazing feast, visit a good Brazilian or Portuguese restaurant for rodizio. Warning: Don’t eat for at least 12 hours prior to dining.

Rodizio Grill was an oasis of calm after the chaos of Simms. We were greeted warmly by the hostess and our server who arrived with two plates of appetizers. The full rodizio dinner included numerous skewers of varied meats plus a huge buffet of salads, vegetables, fruits, and the traditional stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc. EVERYTHING was fresh and delicious.

Personable and funny servers weaved among the tables with skewers of glazed ham, roast pork, tri-tip beef, chicken hearts, two different cuts of roast sirloin, spiced chicken, parmesan pork and bacon, and roasted pineapple. No turkey but who cared!

We devoured all this goodness along with a pitcher of perfect red Sangria. You know the expression “stuffed ourselves silly”? We were there…stuffed, smiling, and silly.

Dessert? Are you kidding? We would need to spend the night. We could barely walk as it was.

One little item: it’s not cheap. The full rodizio dinner is $34.99 per person. Go hungry and enjoy every morsel. And we did!

Thank you, Rodizio Grill, for saving Thanksgiving!!

Not sure what other reviewers were eating, but we thought the food was poor. Meats came out cold, over cooked, or raw often. At this price, it should be excellent. There should be table cloths. The salad bar is only okay, not particularly special. The grilled vegetables were so oily that they were hard to eat. The service was okay, and the wine we had was good. But they did not make the wine. It was truly a poor experience. They really blew it.

My wife and I went to Rodizio for the first time. We have been to Fogo de Chao a couple times and haven't tried Texas de Brazil yet. Rodizio was very nice and comparable obviously to Fogo de Chao (which is just a couple blocks away), but here's our comparison:

Atmosphere and ambiance is definitely better at Fogo. You don't feel like you are going to as nice of place in Rodizios, but you are still paying for it. The appetizers and salad bar are also better and nicer at Fogo. We found the meats to be nearly identical at both places (both very good) with Rodizios having more options that come around.

Overall we had a very nice date at Rodizios, but would definitely go back to Fogo first.

My 1st visit with a friend on her birthday that had a discount coupon. Overpriced for virtually a buffet type service with gauchos bringing never ending sample items on skewers of just about everything you can think of that were lukewarm due to them going from table to table and will keep on coming until you indicate to stop. No booth seating as I would normally prefer.

Meat, meat, and more meat! Perfectly grilled flesh from every imaginable mammal, reptile, and fish on the planet (10 selections for lunch & 20 for dinner). Full salad bar for some fiber to help get all that meat through your digestive system. Your pancreas will hate you in the morning but it will be worth it! This was our fifth visit and it was great. Very consistent service and quality.
