Owner description: The canvas was his ally. The paint and the trowel were his weapons. And the Art World was his enemy. Discover an American Master at the Clyfford Still Museum, home to the world's most intact public collection of a major American artist. From October 14, 2016 to January 15, 2017, the Clyfford Still Museum will display more than 260 of Clyfford Still's works on paper in the Museum's largest exhibition to date. With very few exceptions, paintings will not be on view in the Museum during this time.

“A Pleasant Surprise”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

We visited this museum on the same day we took in the big Denver Art Museum right next door. The museum is devoted to this one artist, Still. One after another, we found his massive abstract canvases captivating and exciting. His selective use of color is amazing. Well worth the visit to make a day of it, park once and see both museums.

“Abstract Expresionism abounds”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

Clyfford Still (born in N.Dakota) became a seminal force in mid-20th century Abstract Expressionism. He directed his heirs to keep his work together. Denver built a separate small museum for this stunning collection which is so extensive the hanging pieces are rotated every 6 months. One of the few museums where you can see the evolution of an artist over 40 years from realism in the early years into highly abstract color field paintings.

“Unique”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

One museum of modern art that comprises nearly all of one artist's entire work. The paintings are huge, hung far apart on huge slabs of concrete in a building of award winning architecture. Only a relatively small number of Still's paintings can be shown at any one time so it is a pleasure to take an hour and view the current display.

“A must see in Denver”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

This museum opened within the past couple of years and is a real "catch" for Denver. I knew nothing about Clifford Still but to have an American artist who wast so prolific and relatively unknown outside the inner circle of the art world is a real tribute to those who campaigned to bring it to our city. The building is so well laid out to display his works it does not take a lot of time to complete the tour.

“Tranquil, lovely museum dedicated to the work of one artist”
Reviewed March 10, 2013

Tiny museums have the potential to combine setting and exhibits in an intimate way that, when successful, takes one’s breath away. The setting of the Clyfford Still Museum, along with almost all of his paintings, is one such example.

This museum shows Clyfford Still’s journey as he moves toward the abstract impressionism and, oh, what an amazing destination occurs once he arrives. The Zen-like architecture of the setting creates multiple locations for his large, vibrant canvases. If you’re in Denver, or will be traveling here, this easy to access museum south of downtown is worth a detour.
