Owner description: The canvas was his ally. The paint and the trowel were his weapons. And the Art World was his enemy. Discover an American Master at the Clyfford Still Museum, home to the world's most intact public collection of a major American artist. From October 14, 2016 to January 15, 2017, the Clyfford Still Museum will display more than 260 of Clyfford Still's works on paper in the Museum's largest exhibition to date. With very few exceptions, paintings will not be on view in the Museum during this time.

“Do you know of Clyfford Still?”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 5, 2012

Many have never heard of him as he took himself out of the commercial art scene decades ago. This new museum, located right beside the Denver Art Museum, is a treasure. You begin with a short film about Still and then enjoy his work, from the classical periods to the modern. It is a fascinating collection and the building itself is worth the visit as it is a piece of art by itself.

“Interesting experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 31, 2012

This museum recently opened near Denver Art Museum. It's an amazing building, well laid out and with great display space. Following Still's wishes, he is the only artist on display--an amazing feat in itself. Lots of his work, while not my favorite, was thought-provoking. With their plan to rotate the displayed works, it will be interesting to return to see what else Still did.

“Amazing architecture for monumental art”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 4, 2012

This new addition to Denver was designed by Brad Cloepfil of Allied Works Architecture and opened on November 18, 2011. The 28,500 sq ft Museum is devoted entirely to the exhibition and conservation of works by Abstract Expressionist painter Clyfford Still. In addition to 10,000 sq ft of galleries, the Museum also features open storage on view, a conservation lab, and Still's archives.
In his will, Clyfford Still left around 2400 paintings, drawings, and sculptures to an American city that would agree to build a permanent home for their exhibition– Denver was selected in 2004. The Museum houses 94% of Still's artistic output.
There is a conscious balance of both soaring, and intimate spaces that accentuate the works by Still. The pressed concrete construction used throughout the building mimics elements of Still's work – and this is only one example of the attention to detail, and evidence of thought, expressed in the architecture. The galleries are lit by diffused skylights, so be sure to visit during the day if possible to experience the galleries lit by natural light! Enjoy!
