My family enjoyed a fine visit to the gardens starting at around 9:00 a.m. Check the hours of the garden, but I think they might open as early as 8:00 a.m. and the garden experience is quiet and relaxed at that time in the morning. My kids shared the enthusiasm that I had as a kid for visiting the giant "terrarium" which is like a jungle. It brought back memories that I had of visiting the garden 30 or more years ago as a kid.

Actually, I was just killing time, until my daughter got off work, and the garden was very close to the Cherry Creek Mall, so I paid a visit. The cool October morning soon turned warm in the afternoon, and every plant and flower was wonderful to see and smell. Since I am a regular visitor to the Hawaiian islands, I didn't spend much time in the tropical hothouse. I thought the cloud forest was interesting, but it didn't resemble the cloud forests I have seen in Costa Rica. I was very impressed with the alpine garden representing the unique eco-systems that grow only on the North and South sides of boulders at high elevations.

CHAPUNGU: This extraordinary collection of over 80 contemporary Zimbabwe stone sculptures is the highly expressive artwork of the Shona people of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Africa. These hand-carved works are made of serpentine, verdite, opal, cobalt and springstone, and vary in shades of yellow, brown, red, green and gray. The pieces represent eight universally human themes and are displayed in natural outdoor settings at Denver Botanic Gardens. The sculptures range in height from three feet to 11 feet and weigh between up to 6,000 pounds. Stone carving workshops; African music, dance and storytelling presentations; cultural gardening programs; sculpture tours and more complement the exhibit.photo by Hans Alfred Loeffler
