We visited with family. The restaurant is part of an old hotel that has just been renovated. There is a casino attached, but operated by another person. On the walls of the restaurant are antique prints of past stage performance billings at the theater just below the restaurant. We have also attend one of the plays and had a great time.

The food was Italian and priced so almost anyone could afford to eat there. All dinners comes with dessert also. Spumoni ice cream is the standard dessert, but for a little extra you can get one of the best brownies I have ever eaten with vanilla ice cream and a cherry on top. It appears that each order is made upon the waiter(s) advising the cook and it is not standing around under heat lamps waiting on an order to come in.

If we are in Cripple Creek at dinner time and Italian sounds good. The Midland Depot will be our choice for good food and quite atmosphere. Some day we may stay in one of the hotel rooms just for fun.

Dining in Cripple Creek is a challenge if you're looking for a place that isn't directly next to or oinside a casino, so it is unfortunately that the Midland, which, with old Imperial ownership was decent, is now so, so, SO bad. The dining room is windowless, poorly decorated, and cavernous. The "italian" menu consists of a handful of pasta dishes, most of which are very cheap like spaghetti, and way overpriced at $9-$14. If you want meatballs, it's extra. My husband ordered the veggie lasagna and I got the arribatta. First round -- drinks. I order a Sprite and got watered down soda water. The waitress did not seem in the least bit surprised, like this happens all the time. So I tried lemonade next. Tasted like it was made with old dishwater. I had my husband taste it and he could drink it either. He ordered coffee, but it wasn't made so we had to wait. And wait. The waitress was very friendly and apologetic and we got the distinct feeling that she knows her restaurant sucks and is trying really hard to make up for it.

Finally we got the coffee, and then the starter salad. Straight out of the bag, limp lettuce, not very fresh. Then we got complimentary bread and olive oil. The olive oil was terrible cooking grade, and the bread had obviously just been unfrozen - tasted like freezer burn. Finally, after about 30 min, we got the entrees. They were a good size, but mine was completely inedible. The pasta was undercooked, the sauce was a brownish chunky pool of grease, and where there should have been traditional capers there were limp, overcooked green bell peppers, white onions, and some other unidentifiable veggies with no flavor. The chicken was dry, obviously -prefrozen strips, and the sausage was super greasy. The whole plate smelled like BO, no joke. I was starving and I tried to eat a few bits but it was so bad I couldn't even fake it. I went to the bathroom and asked my husband to have the waitress put it in a box because I couldn't even look at it. My husband's tasted a little better but he couldn't finish it either.

The complimentary italian ice cream after dinner was also not very good, you could tell it was cheap. Everything tasted like it just came out of the back of the Cisco truck. I know fresher food is a little more expensive in CC, but it's not impossible to get. I live 25 miles from there in another tiny town and our grocery store and restaurant has (reasonably priced) veggies and meats (same chain as CC store). Other restaurants there have much better quality for the same prices, so its obvious that the Imperial is scrimping whereever possible.

The food in the box smelled so bad that I threw it out on the way out of the door. We will never eat there again --- this was not a mistake or a bad night, this was a food system that does not care about quality or repeat business.

Dear Colorado to Arkansas

Let me introduce myself, I am Gary Ledford, my wife and I own the Imperial Hotel and the campus of buildings that comprise the historic buildings that the Mackin family made famous.

We bought the buildings after the bank foreclosed on them, with the thought of returning family friendly events and food to Cripple Creek for exactly the reason you mention, “Dining in Cripple Creek is a challenge if you're looking for a place that isn't directly next to or inside a casino”. If we had not purchased the buildings it would simply be another closed hotel – like the Palace.

We are focused on local patronage, and are staying open in the winter to provide this service. We are now asking our patron’s to participate in a written response to our menu and service so as to improve everything we do.

I regret your experience was “so” bad that you would not have said something to me. You are right about the drinks that night. This one day the Co2 system went down and it was repaired in short order.

Since you are a local, I would hope that we can start over, I invite you to come back, with an entire dinner on me, why your dinner was as bad as you state, is difficult to believe. We pride ourselves on all of our dishes being homemade. We use only the finest foods and never scrimp on costs.

We are new to the restaurant business, and will of course make mistakes. We have only been open for seven months. We have served over 10,000 meals and have received hundreds of accolades, I am hopeful that your review after your next visit will be positive.

With my very best wishes

Gary Ledford - owner

Had reservation so they knew big local group was coming in. Service was prompt, polite and efficient. We all ordered off the menu and the food (nice variety) came out in an orderly manner. Owners pitched in and it was a nice evening.
