Wilderness at it's best - we often see big horned sheep on this trip -

Not for the squeamish! It gets its name from a stretch of it that is between 4 - 5 miles long and is VERY narrow. It's especially scary if you're heading north since your vehicle will be on the outside. Great fun and views.

Go slow and enjoy the day. Bring snacks and pull over by a stream with nature surrounding you. Remember not to litter.

Our son drove us on the road and we loved it. Plan to do it again ourselves in the near future.

I drove the road from Canyon City to Cripple Creek (south to north). The first part of the road is paved, and passes through some non-descript farms, ranches and country homes. But eventually you start to see interpretive displays beside the road that describe the fierce competition among paleontologists to recover dinosaur bones from the area. The "shelf" portion of the road is appropriately scary, but not dangerous if you drive carefully and are alert to oncoming traffic. There are plenty of turnouts to allow other drivers to pass. I stumbled upon a flock of bighorn ewes near Window Rock on my drive, and enjoyed the changes in vegetation and terrain as I climbed up from the cholla and juniper flatlands near Canon City to the pine- and spruce-covered hills near Cripple Creek.
