San Moritz Condominiums
Reviewed October 6, 2012

We visited in September. The condo was nicely remodeled with high end finishes and very clean. We felt right at home. Of course these are condos, so each will vary. The major downside was no elevator, so carrying heavy stuff is a pain. The bed in master bedroom was quite uncomfortable (very firm) and the heating system creaked a lot, which we turned off the first night since it was unnecessary. The other weird thing is there are sliding glass doors instead of windows, which we didn't want to leave open at night, although it's probably just fine. It was not hot but also would have been more comfortable if it had been somewhat cooler. There is no AC. The kitchen is gourmet and was well stocked with wares to enable us to do plenty of cooking. The exterior of the building is dated and needs a renovation (think hot tub time machine), but that didn't really bother us. The unit higher up on the mountain than most places, which could be a plus for some but I'd rather be closer to the base village.

Some of our owners have been able to update their units to various degree. Others need more time to do so primarily due to the fact that we did a major $3.8 million renovation to the exterior common areas of the four buildings in 2009/10 and the assessment for that project was significant. The remodel was only to the outside common areas, with all new materials, balconies, stairwells and roof lines. Installation of elevators was discussed, but cost prohibitive. The exterior remodel has been well received by our owners and guests. The interior stairwells and halls were not done at this time, but discussion is ongoing with regard to this project.

Thank you for your feedback after your stay with us. We are glad you were able to enjoy the remodeled condo at our great, low September rates and the beautiful Fall in Crested Butte.

Nice enough but dated. I see some units have been remodeled I suspect ours hasn't been done for a while. Could be better but good enough for us. No serious complaints. Stairs are demanding with big suitcases. Great views.

We had a great stay with our two little dogs; walk to the ski lifts for a boost up the mountain, or pick up a free shuttle into the quaint town of Crested Butte. Staff are friendly, the kitchens were well appointed for cooking away from home and the living spaces were clean and comfortable. Nice that there are no restrictions on leaving (good) dogs unattended in the condo while out and about, and we never heard other guests or their pets when inside the rooms.

My family has been coming to Crested Butte well before I was born and I've stayed at the San Moritz every time I've visited (30 years). A few years ago the San Moritz had a massive exterior remodel and many of the condo owners followed suit. The San Moritz has a great ski-in/out location and the near by lift stays open 15 mins after closing for San Moritz guests. Also, if you book ski/board rentals through CB Sports or book lift tickets through front office, you get a 15% discount on purchases. Also has a complimentary shuttle to town or mountain vilage. For great views, consider Paradise or International buildings. Both have easy access and parking. I recently stayed in a corner unit, P204, and it has an incredible view and great kitchen that meets any chefs expectations. Easy access to hot tub and firewood.
I'll be back for years to come.

San Mortiz is a comfortable and convenient place to stay. The buildings themselves are somewhat dated, but they are in a convenient location to ski in and ski out. They also have all the things you need. I found it a little strange that there were not washer and dryer hookups in the 4 bedroom condo we stayed in, but we took one load of laundry down to the basement where they have washers and dryers and it worked well. The people running the condo and really most of the town were significantly more "mom and pop" than the I-70 corridor of ski resorts. Mostly it was refreshing on our vacation but I could see times when it might be frustrating. Everyone was really nice, helpful and responsive but we were also there in the early season when it wasn't too crowded so it worked well. I would recommend the San Moritz as a place to stay especially for a family. It is near the slopes and worked well for us. I would recommend it more for the family type trip than the luxury get away because the building is a little dated.

Our family of 4 stayed a week in J101. We found the condo very comfortable and it is nicely appointed. The galley type kitchen was well stocked with anything you could want, including a small crock pot, blender, Cuisanart coffee maker, etc. The beds were comfortable and towel exchange happened about every other day. There is a small wood burning fireplace and a firewood room upstairs from the unit had logs at the ready. An indoor hot tub and sauna are about 20 steps away. There is a small storage locker by the entrance door where we could place our ski equipment. This unit is termed ski in/out but the snow this year was sparse. We could ski out (might have been tricky for a beginner) but definitely were not able to ski in.

Walking to the base area is doable (probably about 15 minutes). There is a Mountain Express bus that picks you up at the end of the driveway (at San Moritz entrance) as well. This is the bus that just caters to the mountain (from my understanding) and there a few a different shuttles that service specific areas. Schedules for stop times vary. We took the Mountain Express bus to get to the base to catch the Mountain Town bus. There is also the San Moritz Suburban that will take you wherever you would like to go as well as pick you up from town and contact phone numbers are provided. We didn't receive a return call for about 20 minutes the first time we called for transportation. I asked if there was a specific system and was told the phone system was acting up at the time but the problem had been fixed. We tried again a few days later and found it a very convenient service. Wait time is probably not more than 10 minutes.

The office staff and drivers could not be any more pleasant. Some of the nicest I have met.

The price was good for the unit. We have also stayed at other properties in Crested Butte.

There is a limited slope side view that can be seen by standing at the doorway and it is partially obstructed by the corner of the building. The view out the master bedroom and front windows is of the parking lot below, some houses beyond that, and of mountains in the distance (I don't know the names of them). People do walk in front of the condo on their way to and from the slopes.
