“Hi Rise Ski Club Visits Crested Butte, CO / Plaza Condo Review”
Reviewed February 9, 2014

Our ski club visited Crested Butte, CO the last week of January, 2014. Our club usually books condos for our week long ski trips as our club members appreciate feeling at home with the flexibility of cooking dinner at home or dining out--the full kitchened time share condos allow for just that--flexibility. Our group of 4 stayed in condo #541, which had somewhat of a mountain view. 2 bd, 2 bath unit with a sleep sofa in the living room. Master bedroom with king bed. 2nd bedroom had 2 twin beds. The condo suite was cozy and nicely furnished--the kitchen was fully equipped and made our dinners "at home" pretty easy to put together. There is a washer/dryer combo in the suite that allows you to wash your clothes mid-week. We've learned not to overpack for ski trips (your bags could easily exceed 50 lbs and the extra charges that are applied to "overweight" bags add lots of extra $$$). Thus mid-week laundry day (and the Plaza supplies Tide and Bounce dryer sheets too, which is a nice touch!) The location of the Plaza was very convenient. We did have a view of the mountain between the buildings in front of ours. We could see the groomers on the slopes in the evening. The in residential shuttle stops in front of the Plaza on a regular schedule. The residential shuttle takes you to the base of the mountain's "transportation center" where you transfer from the residential shuttles to the city bus routes. Very easy to use the bus system. For example: Our group of 36 people had a "pub-crawl" during the week, and we used the shuttle and city bus service to get around. There is no need to rent a car if you're flying into Gunnison. Use the airport shuttle service--reasonably priced and you can enjoy the scenic drive from the airport to Crested Butte.
The Plaza's front desk staff and building management were very friendly and responsive to our needs. One of the condos experienced a water leak--management responded immediately, and moved the residents of that condo to another vacant unit in the building. Maid service was on a daily basis, and consisted of trash removal, and fresh towels for the kitchen and bathrooms. Considering the drought and ecological concerns, this was surprising. The Plaza doesn't recycle (at least I didn't find any recycling bins during our week in the condo) Beds were made by housekeeping, but the sheets weren't changed during our stay. Unit 541 was very comfortable and nicely appointed. The flat panel TV was new, Dish TV service was nice.
Our group appreciated the location of the Iron Horse Tavern on the main floor of the condo building. The food was tasty and reasonably priced, the staff was friendly, and the beer selection was good. We needed 10 large pizzas for a party and the Iron Horse made them for us, easy peasy. And the pizza was GOOD! No leftovers!
Overall, the trip was a success and our group was very pleased with the accommodations, the ski conditions (and fresh powder), and the town of Crested Butte! If I were to travel to Crested Butte again, I would stay at The Plaza Condos again!

This was the perfect family accommodation for our trip with our grandchildren. We stayed in a two bedroom, two bath with a well equipped kitchen. The beds were very good and the unit was nicely decorated and clean except for the chairs on the deck. Check before you sit down. A washer and dryer was in our unit and also an ironing board and iron. The ironing board wouldn't lock in place so it was a danger however it was reported and hopefully fixed.
Perhaps the best feature of the Plaza is the location. It is walking distance to an adventure park for children or the ski lifts if you plan to visit in snow season.
The Plaza staff responded if asked specifically for anything but did not go out of their way to be friendly, therefore the less than perfect score.

We stayed at the Plaza in condo 333. Great place. Nicely furnished. The location couldn't have been better. We had a nice view from our balcony. We were central to everything in the town - not within walking distance really, but still no complaints about the location. I could only imagine how perfect the place would be in the winter as it was literally across the parking lot from the lifts. We had 6 people that were quite comfortable. The bathrooms seemed to have been recently redone. There was granite in the kitchen and very mountain -y furnishings. Everything was very clean. They even provided maid service during our 2 night stay. We enjoyed the stay more than we expected.

The Plaza is conveniently located to the slopes for easy access to skiing and to the road for easy driving to and from the town and easy to find. The building is aging a bit but our unit was nice. The bathrooms appear to have been recently redone and have beautiful tile work. The furnishings were tasteful, nice and comfortable. The kitchen is laid out well had everything we needed for cooking and eating most meals in the condo. I liked the floor plan of the two bedroom/two bathroom unit we stayed in. It was roomy enough for a family of 5. The only problem was one of the elevators was not working – the front desk staff said it would not be fixed until summer. The remaining elevator only goes to the 5th floor. Since we were staying on the 6th floor, we had to carry our luggage up a flight of stairs. You need to know the units on the third floor and below open to an interior atrium, whereas the 4th – 6th floors open to the outdoors. I liked the open hallway, but if my kids were younger I may have preferred the atrium. The Plaza is a short walk across a small parking lot from the Red Lady lift and the Silver Queen. We let the oldest kids come and go on their own between the condo and the slopes. We thoroughly enjoyed the mountain and our stay.

Room Tip: We asked for twin beds in the second room and were pleased to get two bunk beds.

If you haven't been to Crested Butte it is an excellent ski mountain with great terrain for skiers of all levels from beginners (my 6yo son) to experts (myself). The town and ski hill has a very down-to earth comfortable and the people are incredibly friendly (unusually so even for places with this reputation). The condos are great. The rooms have a comfortable rustic feel (which I prefer) rather than an elegant luxurious feel (not really my scene). They aren't ski-in, ski-out but it's a very manageable walk to the slopes and a similar walk to the village. If you want a great place to stay at a reasonable price and you're willing to put in the short walk to the action, then I would highly recommend these units.

These condos are located a short walk across a small parking lot to two of the base lifts. Crested Butte Mountain resort area is a short walk or take the bus from across the street. Busses run about every 1/2 hr around the resort area and you can transfer to a bus to town. Busses are FREE!!! Town, a short distance away, is a small western style town with shops and restaurants. Maxwell's was an excellent restaurant as well as a chicken restaurant around the corner for LOTS of food. Lobar (down steps and underground) is a hopping place for drinks and entertainment with karoke and sushi in a western town for an eclectic mix.
Condos were spacious and outfitted with all dishes and stuff you need to cook (full kitchen). Some have better views, such as the mountain, with others of other surrounding terrain. Store your skis in a locker across from the entrance for great convenience (they will provide you locker keys). Our unit was two bedroom with two bathrooms (some three bedroom units are available).
Nice mountain to ski and they seem to groom a lot. Nearest airport to fly into is in Gunnison, a short hop from the Denver, Colorado airport.

Room Tip: Condos vary in accommodations such as king bed, queen beed, doubles and bunk beds. Ask for a condo...

Our ski club stayed at Plaza Condos. I thought the staff, front desk, housekeeping were all exceptional and helpful. The restaurant at the Plaza Condos is closed and the elevator was not working one day of our stay. The rooms were clean and comfortable. It's a good hike to the ski rental shops and ski area. There was a large comfortable area for our group meetings. All in all it was a great stay at Plaza Condos.
