“A great Day trip from Ocean City”
Review of Assateague Beach

Assateague Beach is definitely one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever been to. For those New Jerseyans out there the miles and miles of unspoiled beaches reminds me of Island State Beach Park on the Jersey shore. The highlight of our visit was seeing the wild horses – we saw them about a ¼ of a mile walk south from North Ocean Beach. I highly recommend a visit here as a change of pace from Ocean City Beach.

I have been to many of the beaches up and down the coast but Assateague is one of the best. The beach is very clean with a charm all of it's own. When you step on Assateague Island you step back in time, to a place when nature was in it's best form....unspoiled!

On our East coast trip, we visited beaches in Maine and Cape Cod. This was our favorite beach of all. It felt more like a West Coast beach with modest surf. The sand was great for digging and building sand castles. Restrooms were located convenient to the beach and parking. Showers were provided, too. Arrive early in the day on weekends or holidays as parking can be a problem.

Assateague Beach is part of a beautiful national seashore and wildlife refuge that covers a barrier island 37 miles long. It is famous for wild ponies, birding and fishing. It runs from Maryland just below Ocean City down to the Virginia part of the Eastern Shore. On the north end there is camping and 4X4s vehicles are allowed on the beach. You can backpack or canoe to primitive campsites on the Maryland side, or stay a few miles away in Berlin, MD or Ocean City. On the south end there is a historic lighthouse, bike trails, scenic marshes and a life guarded beach but no camping, most people spend the day at the beach and the evening in the sleepy Victorian town of Chincoteague.
