A great vacation spot! The ponies and their stories are very interesting, the beach is gorgeous, and Chincoteage has great little shops and great seafood!

I made plans to visit this beach and found out it was the same day as the Pony Swim. Needless to say it was BUSY - but I would return to this beach in a heartbeat. I was confused by the location on the site's map, so you want to head to Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and then drive to Assateague Beach. There is a fee to get into the Wildlife Refuge. Go to the beach near Toms Cove and you can practically park and walk immediately onto a lovely beach. You can also walk the Swan Cove Trail and find a nearly empty beach. Plan to bring everything you need because there aren't any shops in the Refuge, just some restrooms and visitor centers. There are some nice walking trails, but BRING bug repellent for the walking trails!!! This is a beautiful unspoiled beach.

We visited the beach on Assateague Island on the VA side a few times while vacationing on Chincoteague Island last week. We paid $15 for the week/car load - you couldn't beat that and you would never pay that cheap price for a Jersey beach!
It was a bit crowded with the parking and on the beach but we didn't let that deter us. We went different times of the day each time and for only a couple of hours each time. The kids had a blast with the waves and their boogie boards. It was a beautiful beach and would definitely recommend visiting this beach. There was no one at the Snack Shack and they should do something about bathrooms instead of the port-o-potty's they have. Other than that it was a great time!
