We stayed at the hostel for six weeks and had no complaints.... the hostel had excellent staff very friendly an would do anything to help, the rooms were clean, fresh towels were provided every day also the surroundings were amazing with a very nice pool area. the kitchen offered three stoves with plenty of rings for cooking there were plenty of plates and cutlery there for your use, the kitchen was cleaned three times a day from what i could see, activities were put on most nights i.e. pool comps, table tennis comps, movie nights. on a saturday night there is a free bbq provided by Mike and Tracey the managers also on a Sunday morning they cook a breakfast for three dollars CANT COMPLAIN. its close to the beach and woolworths an a free bus is provided and tours daily.
thanks Peta, Mike an Tracey for making our stay enjoyable an fun!!! :) Cat an Mick

The hostel was very comfortable , very clean it had a nice atmosphere with friendly staff also the facilities were excellent as a chef myself the kitchen was spotless ! The owners were really nice very helpfull about the local area and what it had to offer . I would advise anyone to deffinately stay here . The area is still recovering after the cyclone so take this into consideration while in the area .

The 1st thing I have to say about this hostel is the staff are very friendly, and make you very welcome. My friend and I stayed here for 3 weeks. On saturday evenings there is a free BBQ for the guests and is a good opportunity for everyone to mingle.
The pool area is undergoing minor construction but is still open to guests and when it is complete will look even better than before, the tv/dvd room has a nice cozy feel to it and is a great place to relax after a hard day of activities.

We really enjoyed our time here and would go back again.

Stayed in a double room.
Good points-Extremely friendly reception staff, very very friendly, very helpful where they could be.
Able to store valuables behidn reception for free.
They will pick up bus arrivals.
They do daily bus drives to walks/north mission beach.
Lots of plugs in the room.
Pool is nice.
Wildlife there, cassowary visits most days as far as I can tell
They put on activities most nights.
Good washer and really good effective drier.
There was a pictue on the wall in my room which I thought was a ncie effort.

Bad points-
My sheets were dirty (covered in sand/grit and stained) when I arrived. Also ants crawling up one corner. The guys were very apologetic and changed the sheets etc., gave me a free water bottle but it still shouldn't have happened.

Whilst blankets were free they were very small square fleece things, nice enough but needed to be much bigger!
Kitchen was cleaned a couple of times a day, but in between got absoloutely filthy. Sinks clogging up, dirty dishes left everywhere (first time I've encountered this in 4 hostels). Very wary of cooking in there! The fridges also had towels underneath and one door didn't close.
Kitchen was dreadful for finding hobs that worked, most didn't light or gave off a pathetic flame-very frustrating to cook on. Microwave worked though! Storage of stuff was very all over the place but there were adequate items most of the times, although they were rarely clean.

The bathrooms and showers were clean, but there was only one block of them. So if on the second floor you had to go down a corridor, through a locker room, down stairs and along a corridor to use the loo, obviously not much good at night etc. and a bit of a pain.
There seemed to be nearly as many people working there as staff as guests, which is not the sort of place I wanted to stay. This meant they often seemed to take over bits of the hostel, e.g the tv room (fellas just out of bed in their boxers sprawled over sofas-not very inviting to join them!) and when they cooked I suspect a lot of the mess was down to them! I don't like the atmosphere in hostels where there are a lot of people working for whatever (I assume free accom) as it can give off a very cliquey atmosphere as this did. As these guys were doing the cleaning this was where the problems in it not being so clean came in.

The bus tours they ran were taken by foreign workers so actually, just involved driving around back yards looking for wallabies (incorrectly identified by our 'tour guide' who spoke average english as kangaroos) with no local knowledge involved

The luggage storage for the bags was against a wall that anybody had access to so not secure.

Location wise there is nothing to do once you've done rafting(which is excellent)/sky diving. The beach is mediocre, there are much nice beaches south. The local pub is rough. There is a good supermarket. There did not seem to be any local bus services. The main bit of mission beach is an hours walk/ten minute drive down the road. There is not much to do there either so the town gets very boring very quickly!(it was hard to kill 5hours!) (unless you like rainforest walking)

The internet was not working whilst I was there.

If there were perhaps less people working for accomodation and a better cleaning system (and the kitchen kept clean-do what other hostels do and threaten to remove key deposits if people dont clean up!) it would probably be a moderate to good hostel as the staff are so freindly.

As the headline says this hostel is poor to average. It does not have much character, pretty much just a concrete building. The room we stayed in was average. Felt a bit like being in a jail completely surrounded by concrete. The staff however, were extremely friendly and it seems that there is a lot of upgrades taking place to make the hostel better than it is. The owners are new and I believe are trying to make improvements. The main reason why I have given this hostel such a poor rating was because my girlfriend woke up in the morning with red bumps all over her face. Not sure what caused it but it was for sure something to do with the room we stayed in. Possibly bed bugs. I also had one bump on my face. Also, only a sheet for bedding which wasn't very good in the winter. If I am in Mission Beach again I will try one of the other hostels.
