We selected Toreros Mexican restaurant over the others in Canon City because the reviews seemed mostly positive. The restaurant was conveniently located, with traditional decor and a friendly hostess. The chips and salsa were good, but nothing exceptional. The worst part of the visit was our male server. He was not happy to be working, and could not so much as smile or greet us. He was not helpful or responsive with the menu information and did not take the order correctly, forgetting one entree.
Most of the online reviews raved about chili relleno---but BEWARE---the chili relleno served here is not a stuffed pepper roasted and delicious. We were served an omelet with a sliver of soggy pepper inside of it swimming in a bath of watered down Campbell's tomato soup. Probably one of the worst things we have ever eaten. When we questioned the unfriendly server about it-- he said nothing and then didn't return to our table for over 20 minutes. We had to ask for the bill so we could leave.
On a positive note, the pork tacos were flavorful and plentiful---although they sprinkle Parmesan cheese on everything for some reason---maybe it is a local Mexican pratice?
Pricing was pretty standard--nothing appeared unreasonable. The menu indicates an additional charge for chips and salsa, but they didn't not charge our party of 4 for the second bowl of chips or salsa.
Overall---this restaurant is not worth the stop. The service did not make up for the mediocre food.
