Owner description: Experience America’s most spectacular rail journey aboard the Royal Gorge Route Railroad. In 1905, President Teddy Roosevelt described it best as “the trip that bankrupts the English language!” This memorable train ride through the Colorado Rockies features gorgeous scenery, great service and delicious food, sourced locally and prepared fresh right on board the train for breakfast, lunch, afternoon and dinner excursions. The train is running at 9:30, 12:30, and 3:30 daily in Coach, Club, First Class Lunch and Vista Dome. First Class Dinner and Murder Mystery dinner trains run on weekends. Wine Dinners run in August and October, and Oktoberfest runs September through October. Welcome Aboard!

Had a great ride out on the Royal Gorge railway in Canon City. Sat in the dome car to get a view. More fun actually standing in the open air car - got a real sense of the Gorge. Food was really really good and reasonably price. Special shout out goes to our server Dani. Very attentive service and gave us some great information on the trip. She even came running after us when my son had forgotten to pick up his souvenir cup. Great service. Thanks Dani. Great trip. Totally recommended.

Since the fire, this is a unique way to see the gorge at twilight. The meal was high, but quality isn't cheap. They did charge extra for tea and coffee which was expensive since the it cost $115 per person.

The park is still closed due to fire damage, but the train is a fun way to see the gorge. Since the ride is so short (2 hours round trip), we didn't eat (heard the food was great) but we did have a cab rider for a birthday surprise. For a HEFTY extra fee of $150/person, 1-2 people can ride one way in the cab (engine), receive a certificate, and have special photos made on and in the cab. For a train aficionado of any age, it's a memorable experience. Staff was all VERY friendly and helpful from the reservations staff (call for reservations to avoid fee for doing it online-odd switch), to the engineer who entertained the cab rider, to the conductor and servers. Be sure to go to the outdoor car for best photos. At least one employee is out there all the time to answer questions and is willing to tell you history of the water pipeline visible along the way. Great fun!

This was an exceptional decision for our son's 7th Birthday, and worth every penny of the ticket price we paid, which I must admit, seemed a bit much for our family of 4.

The prior year for his 6th birthday we took a ride on the Georgetown Loop Railroad, which was a MAJOR hit, and he asked, once he learned we would be in Colorado again in mid-June this year to visit his Grandma and Uncle, if we could ride another train on his 7th birthday.

I had heard that Royal Gorge Train was a bit pricey but a great ride through the Royal Gorge. I was also told if I had to take a 7 and 9 year old to the the train through the Royal Gorge or go the the bridge over the Royal Gorge, that the train was the better deal. They called the bridge a Royal Gouge. Ouch.

We didn't do a meal ride, we were on the 9am ride into and back out of the Royal Gorge in June, 2012, and we just bought coach seats, which we were in for about two minutes. The open car is the place to be, and we stayed there the whole time in the beautiful weather of our day there. The ride was smooth and delightful and the views were gorgeous, stunning, overwhelming, breathtaking... you get the idea. Spectacular views of the Royal Gorge, and the bridge from below. Plus it was fun as heck to see the rafters come through the gorge.

Not only did my seven year old son love it for his birthday, but my nine year old daughter thought it was impressive, and my wife, her brother and I were awestruck and couldn't believe in all our time in and visiting Colorado, that we hadn't done this earlier. We will be back to take the ride again. And if you live in Colorado, or visit south of Colorado and you haven't done this yet, you need to add this too your list of things to do ASAP.

BTW, If you are driving through it is TOTALLY worth the half to 3/4 day detour to take a ride on the train. As we did not have a meal ride, can't comment on that, but if the food is even just okay, the views would make the meal spectacular.

Glad you decided to include the Royal Gorge Route Railroad in your travel plans, and thanks for such a great review Jeff. Naturally, we love receiving notes like yours. About all I can add is you'll have to dine with us next time you are aboard the train. The food is beyond, "just okay", and when combined with the views do make for a spectacular experience.

We drove to Canon City from Colorado Springs (where we were staying). It's a pretty and easy drive, about an hour from CO Springs. We only did the railroad due to fires damaging everything else in that area. We rode in the top of one of the double decker cars and had lunch. The food was good, my husband had a beer (the selection is local, which we liked) and the view was fantastic. We had to share a table with complete strangers, but they were nice so it wasn't a big deal. You can walk around the train while it's moving so we would go out to the open air car for a bit to grab some cool pics and then come back and sit in our seats. The views are tremendous. I highly recommend taking the trip. We will go back one day and experience the rest the gorge has to offer.
