The view from this narrow road is great. One lane, one way, not for the squeamish driver or passengers.

This free, one-way drive is at the tippy top of a considerable rise that gives you an interesting aerial view, to your Right, of the highway you were just on and the various buildings and a reservoir. Then to the Left of you suddenly becomes visible, revealing housing and other buildings and sites. It is kind of a sudden alternate-reality feeling to find yourself on this very narrow peak with such an expanded view of otherwise hidden sights. Well worth the quick detour off the freeway, and there are some shallow pull-off places to stop, with an easy route right back onto the highway.

We drove the skyline drive in late March 2012. I'm not normally afraid of heights, but I was white-knuckled as I kept saying to my husband "not so fast! not so fast!" as he crept along at 10 miles per hour.

The drive is a one-way drive up a mountain, then back down. There are no guardrails on either side in many places, and the road was just wide enough to accommodate our car. I could look out the passenger window and see nothing but the highway a long way down. It's funny how just the appearance of rocks on one side of the road provides a sense of security.

I would not want to drive this road in bad weather. It was an exhilerating and cheap thrill, and I'll do it again sometime. If you are in the area, the weather is good, and you are not afraid of heights, by all means take the drive.

This is a great little drive just west of Canon City on Highway 50 - it's not for large vehicles like RVs, but great for passenger cars/trucks.

Be sure to stop at the first pull out and walk back down to the signs just a few yards before the pull out - there are dinosaur tracks and fossils in the strata! There are also beautiful views, and the hogback itself is stunning in terms of the layers visible.

Be sure to take the 15 minute trip to travel this road!

Take this short, dramatic little drive which will set you back zero dollars and about 5 minutes. Interesting dino tracks and great views on an extremely narrow road which drops off on both sides.
Hike it if you're staying in the area for a while.
