Yes it is small, yes they tend to be a litle overbearing, but the upstairs, hands-on interactive center was great. The Canon City area has produced some of the very first dinosaur fossil specimens in the country. The museum is built around the stegosauris that it is famous for. For the inexpensive price it is a great place to chill with kids under 13.

We've lived in Canon City for some time and had never visited the Dinosaur Depot because it seemed like it would be so small. We had some out-of-town visitors who wanted to check it out so we tried it. Only cost $4 per adult, and it while it is a small museum it was very well done. Informative placards, impressive fossils and bones, and VERY imformative and helpful staff. You get to see employees in a glassed-off work area picking rock from fossils. They jump at the chance to tell you more about the displays and other evidence of dinosaurs in the Canon City area! They'll also tell you about where you can hunt for fossilized plants in the area. While it is a small museum, the cost is very matching of that size. If you like dinosaurs you should definitely check this place out!

We really enjoyed what there was to see here, but that wasn't much. This museum has 1 room full of fossils, an upstairs hands-on activity room for the kids, and a gift shop. My husband was quite excited to be able to touch an actual fossil, but other than that the museum didn't hold much thrill. Good if you are very interested in paleontology, but otherwise might be better off somewhere else in the area.

If you have active, curious kids, forget about this place. We brought our 2- and 5-yr-old boys, who are both serious dino-fans. They're active and curious, but NOT maniacs. However, we were followed around and shushed and scolded the entire ~40 minutes we were there. And this was in the upstairs DISCOVERY ZONE, which supposedly was designed specifically for kids!!!

There's one room downstairs with a lot of interesting fossils and reading material, but I was unable to absorb or enjoy it, due to worrying so much about my kids offending the staff person who hovered by my elbow as I tried to read!

Same staff person wouldn't let the kids touch any of the toys in the 'gift shop,' saying all the same things were upstairs to play with. However, there was a family upstairs, watching dinosaur videos, who didn't want our kids to play, because THEY were sitting there watching TV.

Dinosaur Depot is SO not worth the admission price. If you have kids, take them to the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center in Woodland Park instead. That place may be privately owned and more of a capitalist venture (according to Dinosaur Depot staff person), but it was MUCH more welcoming, and we spent HOURS at the RMDRC, learning and enjoying a lot.

The Dinosour Depot has gotten way better & bigger than the previous poster described! We live locally & actually purchased a family membership because our 4 year old loves going there. The main museum on the first floor has bones & fossils that were all found locally. The most complete stegosaurus in the world was found near Canon City! There's also a small gift shop on the main floor. Upstairs is the kid's discovery room. Our son's favorite attraction is the box full of crushed walnut shells where you can "excavate" bones. Lots of books & hands on exhibits in the kid room.

After your trip to the museum, I recommend Skyline Drive. It's just outside of town on Hwy. 50. At the top of this free, scenic drive, you get to see real dinosaur tracks!
