Barr Lake State Park is Colorado's birding park. The visitor's center is totally geared to area birds; and their interactions with other wildlife. There are bird feeders around the visitor's center that lure in clouds of little birds. There is even an indoor air conditioned observation room with a comfortable couch to watch.
Hiking is available on prepared, well signed trails. My favorite is the trail to the boardwalk that goes through the wetlands. All hikes are level and easy.
Barr Lake itself is a carp filled mess. It belongs to an irrigation company that clearly does not care for its property. Water levels are kept way below full. In the last 20 years; I have never seen water fill to the wetlands where the trails are. The lake was nearly dry the day we visited.
Colorado does maintain the shore facilities quite nicely. There are picnic areas, play areas, and clean restrooms at the visitor's center.
Limited hunting is available during regular season.
