“We have always loved Breck and now we love Mtn. Thunder Lodge too!”
Reviewed June 29, 2009

Back in 1999 my wife and I honeymooned in Breckenridge. As we approached our 10th anniversary we decided we wanted to return and I began to research places to stay. We ultimately decided on the Mountain Thunder Lodge and we were not disappointed in the least.

Since this was not only going to be a 2nd honeymoon but also a week without the kids, we were hoping for a place where we could relax, read, use as a home base for re-exploring the area and have quiet time together. MTL scored well in all of the above. Please note that we were staying in Breck in early June and therefore after ski season.

The room was very comfortable and clean. Our first night, however, we had a room which faced the road and with the windows open at night (the room was very hot and I don't know why) there was a lot of traffic noise, especially in the morning. Since we arrived on a Sunday there were few people there. I went to the front desk to request a room on the other side of the building and the woman immediately gave us a unit across the hall. This was indicative of the service all week long . . . helpful, immediate and easy going. The new room faced the pool and was much quieter (and unlike the 1st room it had HDTV. Score!)

The kitchen is well appointed with everything you could need. We didn't cook, but it was nice to have a fridge for leftovers and snacks, a full size coffeepot for the morning and all the utensils and dishes necessary. In addition to the kitchen some features of the unit we liked best were the large bathroom, the HDTVs, the balcony (did a lot of reading out there) and the gas fireplace which was used nightly due to the cool evenings.

With the exception of the traffic on the road side of the property the location is great. It's away from the bustle of main street but close enough that you can walk anywhere. We rarely used the car all week long and kept it parked in the underground garage which I can see would be very helpful during ski season.

My wife raved about MTL and has been telling everyone that we stayed at such a great place (which is particularly gratifying for me since I did the research and chose it!) The next time we head to Breck it will be with our children too and the Mountain Thunder Lodge will no doubt be our lodging. It is great for couples and families and we can't wait to return!

We stayed at Mountain Thunder Lodge for a week March 2008. We were very happy with our 2-bedroom condo, which was big enough for us and 4 children (5-12 years). The unit was very comfortable, clean and very well laid out. The heated garage was great, although we usually walked to the gondola in the mornings (5-7 minutes) and skiied in the the evenings. There was a free ski shuttle service in MTL, but in the mornings this could be very slow.

The only real issue was the lack of restaurant facilities at MTL, I don't think there was a restaurant in the complex. We either ate in in the condo or went down town to eat and this worked out fine for us. The shuttle was useful to go down town (especially when dressed up in the evenings) as otherwise it was a 15-20 minute walk.

We would certainly go back to MTL again.

One tip is that Breckenridge is situated at particularly high altitude and altitude sickness is a definite problem for many people. It is advisable to speak with your doctor in advance. We were prescribed acetazolamide (diamox) which in addition to drinking loads of water prevented the problem.

We stayed at MTL in Breckenride March 31-Apr 4, 2009. Overall it was great and we would stay there again! The heated garage was a nice touch and the distance to both town and the gondola was fantastic. We did take the free shuttle to the gondola each morning, but walked to town each night, since we had on regular boots then. It is a gondola out-ski in place. Skiing in was very convenient! The condo was well equipped with dishes and cookware (which we didn't use!), they provide 2 free bottles of water for you, it has a hair dryer in the bathroom, and even an humidifier! Our condo had a nice flat screen TV and a DVD player. Oh and although the website is confusing about wireless internet (one part says it is free, and another part says it is free for the first hour), it is actually very useable.. it is free for the first hour you use it each day, and for each computer. My husband and I each brought our laptops and each of us had free internet for an hour each night. That was enough for us to get through our work-related emails. They have a pool and a hot tub but both are located outside, so we didn't end up using them.

Our condo was the very first one down the hall from the reception area. It was next to the awesome locker room (they give you a key to your own locker so you can store your wet skis and snowboards there, rather than in your room). Also, our condo was right next to the entrance where the shuttle came and went. Regardless of the location, it was VERY quiet-- I never heard a van or people in the reception area. We could hear other doors shut, but every hotel has that problem and the background sound of the humidifier really helped with that.

The staff were very friendly and very knowledgable and it was among the cleanest places I have stayed! Some of the minor issues:
We booked a studio room. I'm not sure if this was my fault in that I didn't see the bed was a murphy, but it only had a murphy queen size bed-- just something we weren't expecting, since a murphy bed is basically like a pull out, and not that comfortable. They were a bit stingy on the coffee/tea (wouldn't provide more than 1 thing for coffee and 1 tea bag each night, with only one creamer/sugar set). When we asked for more, the front staff said 'they were funny about that', but then someone brought up a handful for us. They do have delicious coffee available for free in the lobby each morning, though. The only other issue was the green-ness of the location. Although they do provide recycling for bottles, they ran our dishwasher the first day when we had left a total of 2 mugs, one plate and one spoon in the sink! What a waste of water. I was shocked so after that I did our tiny number of dishes myself each morning so they wouldn't do that again.

All that said, I would definitely stay there again. It was far enough away from the noise of the town (we were there during spring break) and it was comfortable and clean.

We went along with three other families and each of us rented a one or two bedroom condo. Everyone loved it and there were no complaints. The units are spotless and the beds were made and the rooms cleaned daily. Starbucks coffee was left in the room every day. The kitchen was well equipped. MTL staff was friendly and very helpful, reccomending places to eat, things to do etc. It's a five or ten minute walk into town and the van pick us up promptly evey morning for the 10 minute ride to the Beaver Run lift. It was a pleasure to be able to ski back to the lodge every afternoon.

Simply put, you can not beat Mountain Thunder Lodge in Breckenridge, CO! The place is awesome, is close to everything, very nice, and has everything you want / need to expect in a nice ski resort. We stayed in unit 704 and it is a beautiful 2 bedroom 2 bath unit. The unit was very clean and well cared for and was very warm and inviting!
The staff was great, the condo was great, the location was great! You can walk everywhere, such as to the the new gondola, to the grocery store, to downtown, etc. It is the best location in Breckenridge HANDS DOWN. This is a 5 star resort!
You will not find a better place in all of Breckenridge. My family has been going their for years and we will never stay anywhere else in Breck, unless of course it's free. Mountain Thunder is AWESOME

Our family stayed in one of the town house units (#204; two bedroom, two bath, sleeper sofa), as opposed to the rooms in the lodge. We could not have been happier with our decision. While the town house units are deemed "tram on / ski off" not all units are created equal in this area. For the best proximity of access - from the ski trail, as well as the lodge (& it's free shuttle), outdoor hot tub, tram and downtown you should definately consider this unit. It faces the mountain & the trail you ski in from, has no one above you, is just steps away from one of the more private outdoor hot tubs (and just a few more steps away from the main pool complex), and is very tastefully furnished including leather couches and a large flat screen TV in the family room. Rooms are large, walls are soundproof (never ever heard the party next door) and the layout very intelligent.

Upon check-in the unit was immaculately clean including all the applicaces which even had their power cords all neatly coiled (toaster, blender, coffee maker, hair dryer, humidifiers, etc). And it did not hurt that the unit was essentially brand-spanking new. This unit is designated as 'pet free' which was helpful for our son who has asthma - not to mention the extra cleanliness due to no dander / pet hair.

The heated garage was great for storing all our gear not to mention parking the full size rental SUV (a very large Chrysler Aspen). The outdoor deck would be a nice spot to hang out in the Spring/Summer/Fall and had chairs & table. When it was time to go to town, it was great to have the choice of a less than 5 minute walk, or complimentary 2 minute shuttle service for when the legs were especially tired. The downtown shops and restaurants really add to the experience, as do the abundance of holiday lights (note we visited in February). Thankfully there is not a McDonalds to be seen, but rather more unique spots covering a broad range of interests. We will definately be back, and request this unit again.

First of all we have been skiing only a couple of time before so we were not that prepared. Buy the goggles and neck turtle things if the weather is cooler. Also if you have kids get them the goggles. The ski school was nice enough to let our three year old borrow some. Go to peak 9 first if you are not an advanced skiier. Much better greens and lift is easier to get on. You have to be at the ski school by 9am.

We stayed at Mountain Thunder Lodge for 5 days. We booked our one bedroom condo six months in advance and after checking the room rate a few weeks before our trip the rates were almost half of what we had paid. I called the reservation center and they gave us lift tickets and ski rental to make up the difference since we were past the 21 day refund limit. That was fine with me since we would have been buying them anyway.

The staff when we checked in were great. Mary the manager was so helpful running through the ski runs on the map and suggesting places to eat.

We had plenty of room with four adults and two small children, with the pull out couch. the room was great with full kitchen and beautifully decorated. The only thing I would have liked was an indoor pool for our young kids but the pool and hot tubs outside were great too.

The only thing we would have done differently was to take our three year old to the ski school at the base of peak 9 instead of 8 (which is where the gondola takes you.) It was easier to see the kids outside practicing b/c you ski right by to get to the lift and much better acess for taking pics when they are doing the last practice of the day.

As for eating out with our kids we stayed away from the fancier places and went to Eric's several times. Excellent food and very accomodating for families.

Don't for get to check out ice skating at the arena too. $10 to rent skates.
