“Tasty food, tiny portions”
Reviewed November 24, 2012

Good for those who like nice food in a nice atmosphere, but are not very hungry. For First Bite we had an incredible mushroom bisque, a minuscule portion of tasty fish with bland lentils, and a flan that I loved but my companion left after one spoonful.

“Pretty Standard Bistro with Amateur Service”
Reviewed October 29, 2012

This was a very buzzy and trendy place. The atmosphere was good, but the menu was pretty bistro-standard and the food was only OK. By the time the food got to us from the kitchen it was only warm, not hot, and the service was very amateurish. Perhaps they were breaking in a bunch of new waiters/waitresses, but most of them seemed pretty clueless about what a waiter/waitress was supposed to do. I ordered a bottle of wine and they brought the wrong one. If you needed water or wine you had to ask. We waited for a long time before anyone offered us coffee or dessert. And it was pretty expensive, to boot.

This evening's dining experience went down as a total F. I have lived in Boulder since 1970, know the restaurant scene and players, have been in the industry in the past, and am a consummate "foodie". My friends and colleagues often seek out my advise on where to go - for fine dining, great sandwiches, choice seafood, breakfast, lunch, apps, dinner.
The three of us showed at Mateos at the appointed hour for our reservation on the patio, for happy hour. Rather cute setting, with potted flowers. One of the friends was in a wheelchair with a therapy dog.
Service: appalling. Waiter very indifferent. Bar out of the ubiquitous vodka one friend ordered -we didn;t hear about it until long after drinks were ordered - ???!!! Way too long in bringing requested water.Three dinner menus were provided, but only 1 tiny happy hour menu. Had to ask twice for lemons. Mussel app - tiny, overcooked mussels in a very mediocre broth. No flavor to tomatoes and onions - they should have been sauteed for a boost. Bland, boring.
Friend's hamburger was ordered medium rare. After lengthy delay, waiter brought it so rare it was bloody and mooing. Sent back. Another interminable delay. Back to table. Still so raw it was stringy. No offer of anything else from waiter. Finally, insouciant manager waltzes over and asks us if everything is alright - PULEEZE! who are you kidding? He blithly tells us he'll deduct the burger from the bill. Asks if he can get the indisposed "guest" anything else. Of course, by this time, the friend's appetite has been trashed. No offer of comping drinks, dessert, nothing.
To top it off, we were near the corner of the narrow patio with the exit door and staff seated a party of 4 right in the line of "fire", my friend's exit in her wheelchair. Very awkward. Poor other diners were in a tight fit, needing to stand and move the table for our exit.
This is inexcusable in a town that prides itself on its quality restaurants. If you want to call yourself 'fine dining", then live up to its standards: hospitality, knowledge of menu, punctual, courteous service, great food, and desire to keep customers happy.

“over rated-over priced”
Reviewed August 9, 2012

Although we had reservations (for 4 people ), we had to wait for an hour and a half to be seated. The patio tables are tiny, so they pushed 2 together in the back of the patio where they store chairs. It seemed like a service area. As it was 9:30 PM by that time, we accepted the location. The restaurant space itself being very noisy due to hard surfaces. We ordered fish, chicken and a burger entres from the menu. The best I can say is that nothing was interesting. Trout was bland, chicken, ok and the burger was not cooked as ordered. When presented with the check, it was incorrect, so sent it back to be corrected.
The waitstaff was pleasant, but the Maitre' d was out of touch with our our unpleasant experience. In conclusion, there are many better choices in Boulder for you to have a pleasant dinner experience.

“Great french food in a casual atmosphere.”
Reviewed May 7, 2012

Four of us had lunch at Mateo on May 3, 2012 and it was outstanding. All of us had the special which was duck confit over risotto and everyone of us loved it. We also had a side of pomme frites which were spectacular. We sat outside on the patio which was pleasant and comfortable.

The staff was very friendly and provided great service. They have a very extensive wine list that is understandably heavy with french selections. They have some great selections from Alsace and some good Vouvray which is unusual to find in Colorado.

Entree prices are reasonable and the wine prices are in line with most restaurants in Boulder.

We will certainly return.
