All style and no substance. The entire staff seemed annoyed about having to serve us. It took 15 minutes to order. Our salad was full of rotten lettuce. Our cocktails didn't arrive until after we had finished our salad, and they were the wrong drinks. The spaghetti with clams had sand in it. The "secondi" wasn't fired until after our appetizers were finished, and had been sitting there for 20 minutes, so we waited another 15 minutes. in a nutshell, nobody cared about the customers in the restaurant. One of the worst dining experiences I've ever had in Boulder in 30 years.

“Little Italy in the Heart of Boulder”
Reviewed February 24, 2013 via mobile

In the heart of the historic and affluent West End of Boulder, where starting a new restaurant is a sporting game, Pastavino's has achieved excellence. Aside from providing superb Italian food, they stand apart from any competitors with their gluten-free options. For most Italian restaurants, pasta and gluten-free are oxymorons, destined like 2 star crossed lovers never to marry. The 2 adults had the Gluten-free Spaghetti Carbonara and simply could not tell we were eating gluten-free pasta. Go early around 5:30 and you are assured of seating without a reservation and the acoustics if the room are more whispers. The only problem we had was our own fault. The plain pasta ordered by the 2 children was tossed in olive oil, instead of butter. We were promptly re-served the dishes with the requisite melted butter and Parmesan cheese. Our bad for not reading the menu clearly. If you're visiting Boulder, Pastavino's is a must on your bucket list. If you live there, then you already know.

“First visit and eager to return”
Reviewed January 15, 2013

My wife and I enjoyed a very nice dinner at Pastavino this week and pleasantly, found none of the negatives apparently experienced by other reviews. The decor is contemporary, set off against the original brick walls of the building. Having eaten so many times in the space once occupied by Juanita's, the change was remarkable. We ordered the Pastavino salad and carpaccio as appetizers, each of which was excellent and of surprisingly generous proportions. For our main courses, my wife had the bronzini and I had the amatriciana, again both delicious and more than large enough to be satisfying. We ordered one of their baked in house breads, which I highly recommend. Our server was a very engaging young woman named Francesa who had spent a good part of her childhood in Milan. She was attentive, courteous and efficient and added to our overall good impression of the restaurant. The menu is large enough to remain interesting after repeated visits, and we intend to return soon for one of their daily home made pastas. All in all, and excellent addition to downtown Boulder.

“Chain restaurant prices for fresh quality dining”
Reviewed December 16, 2012

We visited Pastavino for a business dinner and enjoyed the experience. Our group was seated promptly with an attentive waiter ready for drink orders. The cocktail, beer and wine menu is quite extensive with many local brews. but one of our diners was disappointed there was no Makers' Mark bourbon. The food menu has a wide variety of starter and entree options including some "classic" dishes such as penne amatriciana which several of us enjoyed; seafood pasta and gnocchi were also devoured. My minestrone soup was deliciously fresh and simple but a colleague found the tomato/mozz salad disappointing. Several diners in our group ordered "individual" pizzas which probably are the way to go if you're super-hungry. I agree with another reviewer that the pasta portions aren't huge, but certainly adequate for most folks - and the prices reflect this. The restaurant also just serves thin breadsticks a la Delta Airlines at the table; given the delicious bread aroma from their ovens it would be nice to have a hot loaf to share as well. The dessert menu was pretty standard and fairly limited so we opted for caps and after dinner drinks which left everyone quite satisfied. If you're looking for a decent place to bring a group that includes some vegetarians and not break the bank, worth a visit.

“Tiniest dinner portions I have ever seen”
Reviewed December 14, 2012

Went w/a CU student who recommended it. Great wait staff, the arugula salad was decent. They served it with the oil, balsamic and cheese on the side so you could dress it yourself. That was fun.

The dinner portions were amazing - I've seen appetizers bigger. I had the gnocchi, recommended by the server. Flavor was good, texture not so much - kinda mushy. Needed to be more al dente.

Won't be going back . .
