We had hiked the Flatirons and Arch on a previous trip to Boulder and wanted to do one or the other again, but were nervous about the Chautauqua trailhead being busy, so some friends recommended we start at NCAR and hike the Mesa Trail in instead and what a great recommendation! It not only added some additional time onto our hike, but the views and scenery were amazing. You can definitely hike the Mesa trail on its own as well and it's an easy hike suitable for children or new trail runners. Round trip from NCAR to the Arch is about 7 miles (my best guess) and took us (active people, but not experienced hikers) about 4 hours.
