Boulder is the place for outdoors. The trails are all well maintained and easy to follow, though some more demanding that others! Flag staff is steeper but very 'do'able for moms and pops. We had two very outdoorsy boys go through school here and they show us the best spots to go. This one is definitely worth the effort and has amasIng views.

The small areas off the road to picnic and of course the views around each corner.

The bikers on the road are scary - especially since you cant see them coming/going or down hill whizzing by....a dangerous situation. Bikers beware...

This is popular biking route. Rewarding exercise with good vistas all along the road. There is also a good hiking trail that leads to the top. Mule deer are frequently seen along this trail. Good picnic areas are abundant.

Great sunset, a little scary for those of us who are freaked out by open heights - especially after a couple of yummy CO microbrews.

I originally planned on driving up the mountain to visit the nature center and see the view of Boulder. However the road was closed to everyone but local residents, so parked along the street at the bottom and climbed up a portion of the mountain. Given that I hadn't planned on doing much hiking, I decided to spend my time hiking at the adjacent Chautauqua National Landmark and the Flagstaff Mountain.

I climbed up enough of the mountain to be able to get a beautiful view of downtown Boulder. The hike up the trail is pretty much uphill all of the way, so it would be advisable to be in relatively good shape. You can bring your dogs as long as they are leashed (however there were those who chose to break the law anyways and let their dogs roam free when not in site of the ranger station). There were also some nice rock formations along the route.

If you re looking for a place to hike, Flagstaff Mountain would be a good option. Even when there are a lot of people next door at the historical landmark, not many people were hiking up the mountain so you never feel rushed and have a sense of having the place all to yourself.
