The trip is a beautiful drive up to the top of Flagstaff Mountain with a trail crossing the road making it's way to the top. So, you can either hike up or many people bike, (not for the faint of heart) by the way I always go up in a car. There are many trails heads on the way up to park and at the top for a wonderful hike. There are trails at the top if you turn to the west when you get to the top that you can walk back a little way and see the snow topped Continental Divide- there is a spot called Artist Point.
The vistas along the road up to the top are amazing there are many pull offs and opportunities to take pictures along the way. There are picnic tables at the top and along the way. There are also grills if the fire danger is not too high. There is also a ranger station and an amphitheater at the top that hosts everything for ranger talks to weddings.
At the many places to look out over Boulder and beyond onto the plains you can identify the CU campus and the downtown area. Take a picnic and enjoy the day. It is right up Baseline Road and you can spend a little time or a day.
