“Our Favorite Vacation Spot!”
Reviewed August 19, 2011

This was our 4th summer to spend our vacation at Elk Point Lodge. We just can't get enough of the place and the people. The location is absolutely gorgeous. The cabins are clean and cozy with comfortable beds! Our cabin faced the lake and we spent mornings sipping hot chocolate and reading books on the porch while our daughter had the time of her life feeding peanuts to the friendly chipmunks. We always go in August (to escape the Texas heat) and love that we need to pack sweatshirts to wear in the early morning and evening. One of our favorite activities is horseback riding. The trails go through the San Juan Forest and by Vallecito Lake. It is breath-taking and so peaceful. Pete - the wrangler and guide knows horses like no one else and enjoys teaching us about them. Beth was a new wrangler this year and was so friendly and helpful. The spa is new this year and I took advantage and got an incredible massage from Virginia - a great way to start off a relaxing vacation! We loved skipping rocks and wading in the lake - just a short walk down the hill from our cabin. This year, we also spent an afternoon hiking at Pine River trailhead - about a 3 mile drive from Elk Point. The hike was gorgeous and leads you to the river's edge where you can wade and river walk. One of the best features of Elk Point Lodge is the people. The owners, Lark and JR are two of the nicest people you'd want to meet and go out of their way to make sure everyone has a great time. We truly feel as if Elk Point Lodge is our second home! We are already planning our trip for next summer.

We stayed four nights in cabin #4 and we truly thought we had fallen into Heaven on Earth! The cabin was cozy, clean, and very well-stocked with everything we needed. The view from the deck was amazing--the lake was only about 50 feet away! Don't be fooled by the other properties on Vallecito that claim to be "lake front". We checked all of them out, and only Elk Point is TRULY lake front. J.R. and Lark were amazing. They made us feel like we were long-lost friends right off the bat and were available to meet our needs, but were never intrusive. The breakfast trail ride was an absolute blast! The horses are very well kept and easy to ride. The guide, Pete, and wrangler, Beth were awesome. (Be sure to ask Pete about his being inducted into the Quarter Horse Hall of Fame for being the first jockey to ever earn over a million dollars!!!) The breakfast afterwards was fabulous!!! And you have to check out Virginia in the Day Spa! Oh my!!! She provides wonderful services in a VERY peaceful setting--the best massage I've ever gotten! All we know is that we truly hated to leave. Five minutes away from Elk Point, we were already planning our trip back next year! And this time we plan to bring the entire family! Durango, Silverton, and Mesa Verde are all easy day trips. We can't recommend those sites enough! The best thing is that after a busy day of sight seeing, you get to come back to Elk Point and just relax and unwind. Is this a five-star hotel? No. But it is something much better.........renewal of your sanity for however long you're lucky enough to get to stay. We'll definitely be back!!! Oh---and bring shelled peanuts for the chipmunks! They'll come up and eat out of your hand!!!

Room Tip: The website for Elk Point is very detailed and will help you find the best cabin for your needs.

We stayed for two nights in cabin 6 and had a very nice visit. The hosts, Lark & JR, were very friendly and the location, nestled into an old growth ponderosa forest untouched by the Missionary Ridge fire (from 2002), is lovely. We went on the sunset ride with our two kids (7 & 9) and had a wonderful steak dinner cooked over the fire with the hosts and the two wranglers who took us out - a really nice evening.

Some of the other cabins looked like they might be a little "cuter" inside than others, though I did no inspection. Ours was two bedrooms upstairs with pine planking on the walls and sort of a cinder block bunker down below with enough of a kitchen for us to make breakfast and keep beer cold. One of the other reviews characterized the decor as "unabomer" style. I think that is a little harsh (though funny), but they are simple.

There is no general store anymore; it is now a "spa." Everyone I guess must have a spa. The boat dock seems to have largely crumbled and there are no boats for rent any longer - I heard some mention of regulatory problems with the BLM though I have no clue. There were 2 weary canoes available for rent, but we opted to rent a motor boat a short drive away across the lake. Pretty cheap and a fun day on the lake.

Vallecito Resevoir is a pleasant place to hang out in the trees, watch the birds, rent a motor boat, go for a horse back ride and generally relax. Doing so at Elk Point Lodge seems like a pretty good choice to me.

Room Tip: Cabins 3, 4 & 7 looked to have prime locations

The inside of the cabins were clean, well-kept and comfortable, however the outside maintenance could be improved. The decks were full of peeling paint and some of the deck furniture was broken. The cabins advertise themselves as having horseback riding and canoe rentals, however we found when we got there that they were no longer offering canoe rental. There was also one day where the horse riding was closed and they seemed unsure if a morning or afternoon ride would take place on the other days. We booked the cabin thinking that we would rent canoes a lot, so it was quite a disappointment that we had to get in the car and drive around the lake to the nearest canoe rental place.

Room Tip: Ask for a cabin with lake view, away from the horses.

The staff at Elk Point Lodge was great wanting to make our 5 day stay a real treat for 4 lady cousins from AR and TX. We were in Cabin 6 which had enough sleeping space for each to have their own plus 1 1/2 bathrooms. The new spa is great. Virginia is one of the best massage therapist!. We had facials, chair message and one cousin had the full body message. What a treat! Check out Virginia's swing over looking the lake!!

While my partner called the inside of the cabin and its furnishings "uni-bomber" decor, it was adequate. We stayed in Cabin 4 which is just big enough for 2 adults and maybe one small child. The cabin is clean and the deck and view out of the front window is AWESOME! If you don't like cheesy plastic lawn furniture, bring your own folding chairs (we bring ours to every thing). We rented their boat, and it was sort of run-down, but it worked and it was nice to go around the lake in and see the sights. It was hard to get the boat into the dock without help from the staff. There is no air conditioning. You are in the mountains after all. They do have grills you can use which we did most nights.
The STAFF was EXCELLENT!! If you are a finicky cook, bring your own knives. Theirs leave a lot to be desired.

Room Tip: Talk to the staff to get best room

went with mother in law uncle in law wife and kids. lodge was clean and had everything you could ask for i.e. microwave, dishes coffee pot etc. J.R. and Lark Kokesh were so friendly even though it is a business to them they made us feel like friends and family. They were so kind to our children they let them feed and pet the horses. the breakfast ride was so great the food was outstanding and plentiful no one left hungry. We will be frequent visitors and all our friends and family have or will soon hear abut the greatest long weekend my family has ever had. Thank you J.R. and Lark you are the best. Ted Jennings and family. May you all have continued good luck for many years to come.
