“Good New Find in Roaring Fork Valley”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 6, 2012

We stopped for lunch at Tempranillo, a Spanish/Italian place in Basalt, which is twenty miles north of Aspen. The setting is a large old house with nice outdoor dining and a large bar area. The food was delicious, service was knowledgeable and the overall experience was very good. We will definitely be back.

“Just barely average”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 17, 2012

We visted Tempranillo on a Saturday evening. There were very few tables that were occupied inside or out. There seemed to be an issue finding a reservation for a party of four when three quarters of the restaurant was empty. A staff person and then the owner made the party stand and wait by the front door while they were looking for the reservation. Not good. There were so many empty tables, it could not have been an issue to seat a party of four. The server could not remember the specials and had very little to say about the wine menu. Someone on their first night with a little personality could have done as well. The tapas we ordered was marginal - and certainly not worth the price. The crab cakes had too much in them that was not crab and the dates were hard and cold. Very disappointing.

“Basalt, really??!!??, you're so lucky”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 15, 2012

Absolutely incredible. Food, wine, service. We worked our way through the tapas menu with the help of the incredibly knowledgeable server and had a great experience. We will go back anytime we are within 100 miles of this place. Cannot recommend it enough.

“Great Spanish Food!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2012

Owner, Javier, has a rich history of restaurants in the Roaring Fork Valley here and Tempranillo may be the flagship. The best experience is in the bar seated at the long, granite, island bar. Start with a beverage made by, Louise, a longtime favorite local bartender, then order from the Tapas menu. I make my dinner to share just from the Tapas menu. Even the side veggies served with the Tapas are phenomenal!

“The chef should not offer fish.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 10, 2011

This is a sumptious restaurant in which the expectation is for a $50 meal. I ordered the Halibut Fillet, which came nicely seasoned on a bet of baby asparagus over roasted wedges of potatoes, garnished with artichoke leaves. Unfortunately, the Halibut was "tough", e.g, well overcooked. I hat further into the first half of the fillet hoping that perhaps the core was more moist, but it was not, and decided I was done.

The chef tried again. This time the initial mouthful was appropriate, tender and moist. However the second bit was still pink, and undercooked. This is a disappointment for which the owner (who was present) did not acknowledge.

Though I appreciate the chef making the effort, he does not have the patience to prepare a thick fillet slowly under genteel heat.
