“Historic old downtown”

West Miner Street Historic District
Ranked #1 of 10 things to do in Yreka
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 20, 2011

The West Miner Street Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

When the gold rush town of Yreka burned in 1871, the residents were determined to rebuild with brick and stone so it wouldn't happen again. Most of the buildings date from after 1871, although there are a few which were built in the 1850's.

Pick up a map at the Chamber of Commerce or practically any retailer - we got ours at Yreka RV Park where we were staying - and begin the tour on West Miner Street. You can either walk or drive, as we opted to. The streets are comfortably wide and there is not much traffic.

There are about 75 buildings marked on the map. Many are private homes, but some are open to the public. We drove around slowly and looked at nearly all of them. Some are quite interesting with informative plaques.

There are also some murals in downtown Yreka, although they are much more recent!

If you like old buildings, it's worth taking this self-guided tour :-)
