My brother and I were passing through and stopped here for lunch. We loved the food and the service was great. I was hoping for some peach cobbler, but they were out.

This review is for the Black Bear Diner in Yreka...this place ought to be closed! The food was reasonable, but that was the only thing going for this Diner. Almost everything was dirty, and having been seated next to the counter, I had the opportunity to witness first hand all of the "don'ts" with regards to the hygiene practices with some of the waitresses. On waitress in particular never washed her hands after 1) picking up trash off the floor, 2) moving floor carpets, 3) taking out a trash receptacle from under the counter, and THEN 4) handling the food (picking up the top burger bun) to make sure the order was correct and then delivered the order....all without washing her hands at all with the exception of wiping her hands off on her pants.

We have eaten at other Black Bear Diners at OTHER locations and they exceeded our expectations...but the Yreka Diner needs a visit by the Health Department and closed!

I am a big fan of Black Bear Diners and this one did not disappoint. Busy atmosphere and noise level but the food, as always, does not disappoint. Went there twice once for dinner and had the slow cooked pot roast and chicken fried steak. Both huge portions and delicious (chicken fried was a little over-salted) and the desert was great. We returned for breakfast and again the portions were large (4 slices of extra thick bacon) and cooked exactly (eggs basted and over-easy.) The staff was very helpful and friendly. We were out in the boondocks and the service was slow (compared to San Francisco where you are hustled in and out) with a large staff available but some of it was still being trained. I stop at Black Bear almost every trip through this area. There are several and they are all good.

Portions are enormous. Chorizo scramble was deeelicious. The decor is very beady sweet and down home. Our waitress was kind, attentive and personable with a great long pony tail. No pretensions here. Down home. Rockin robin was playing in the background. Love their bear marketing.

This was our last stop on our way home from a 10-day wine country trip. We had been in several high-end restaurants, with typical Napa Valley high-end prices. Some were better than others, but the breakfast that we had at Black Bear was the best one on the trip. The servings are outrageously huge. If that isn't enough, the service was fast and friendly, and again the best we experienced on the whole trip! The value for the quality and quantity of food was outstanding. We will definitely make this a stop on our next road trip to California!
