“Very good food, $$$, but establishment skimps where it can”
Reviewed August 30, 2014

The service (when available) was very good. Knowledgeable staff.

Food was very good. Huge portions, and well crafted.

Anytime I'm paying $100 pp for dinner, I have a high expectation. Finding soap from Target (Method brand) in the restroom is simply unacceptable. The price of the food contributes to the overall experience, and using cheap soap diminishes from the experience. It lends the visitor to believe the products in the kitchen might be cheap as well. That being said, I would definitely go back as the food was amazing.

“Food to die for”
Reviewed August 28, 2014

This place is another of Thomas Keller's creations. The atmosphere and ambiance are very California casual. The bar area looks like a great place to hang out and enjoy some fine wines. On the night we selected, we were promptly seated by the very courteous hostess. Our server was efficient and attentive without being intrusive. The food was out of this world....the menu is fixed each night so you have to be flexible. We had the pork short ribs and they were spectacular. The meat was just so tender and flavorful and falling off the bone. The portion size was generous and the main dish was accompanied by a heaping mound of roasted vegetables and fingerling potatoes....The meal is served family style which was also different....There was a decent but not terribly complex wine list.

Overall, a great experience.

“Comfort food at uncomfortable prices ”
Reviewed August 27, 2014 via mobile

Liked the idea of comfort food, but the execution did not live up to its hype or the price. Perhaps my expectations were high based on my experience at Marcus Samuelsson's Red Rooster, but Thomas Keller's fixed price fried chicken dinner at $300 ( with wine) was quite a disappointment: a glorified KFC meal for the snobs , who were attracted by the Thomas Keller name.
On a good note, service was great and efficient with a great wine selection. ( loved the half bottle options) But the food and the experience was outrageously overpriced . For the same price I recommend a tasting menu at Redd, or for simple fare opt fir Garcia's taco truck .

“Don't expect food anywhere near French Laundry”
Reviewed August 22, 2014 via mobile

If you go to Ad Hoc expecting anything remotely similar to the type of food that you would get at French Laundry, you will be sorely disappointed. We thought that a fixed-priced menu would at least produce something interesting, but instead we got brownies and ice cream for dessert (seriously?! on a fixed priced menu!), a big cut of cheese and honey (limited preparation required), a NY strip with garden vegetables (reasonably good but nothing special) and an heirloom tomato salad. It really was just higher-end mass produced food for people who perhaps were attracted by the Thomas Keller name. We should have gone to Redd next door for better food.
