Four of us went for a weekend lunch to Bardessono in Yountville. We decided to order off the menu so we asked for "chef's choice" and were thrilled by Chef Sean O'Toole's selection. We started with a crab salad that was light and very interesting because it came with a jelly made with lemongrass essence. Delicious. Next was a gnocchi with artichokes and black truffle shavings that melted in your mouth. The main course was presented to us prior to serving it—the most decadent version of steak and eggs you ever saw. It was a whole braised beef shank laid over a thick cut of cured pork belly and topped with a seared lobe of foie gras. As if that was not enough, the plate also included piece of brioche toast with a poached egg on top with more shaved truffles. YUM! The wine selection was very nice, and we also enjoyed the cocktails, especially one made with campari, limoncello and sparkling wine. To end the meal, we had a cheese plate with some nice pears, chutneys, and local bread as well as a light chocolate mousse with some caramel ice cream. All in all, this was one of my favorite meals in a long time. Maybe it was the amazing setting, a new very "green" hotel with modern amenities. Speaking of such, I usually do not talk about bathrooms when raving about a meal, but these were super high tech, like the kind I once saw in Japan. The lid opens on its own to a warm seat, then you can get rinsed and air dried, all with the touch of a control pad on the wall. The rest of the hotel and grounds are beautiful. I like the modern design with the green materials. We asked to see one of the rooms and were not let down. This one had it's own steam shower that lead to a private patio. NICE! Even celebrities were hanging about Bardessono. We ate close to ex-superman Dean Cain who was with friends including 90210 alum Jason Priestley.
