The reviews that I've read have been negative but I've stayed here twice and each time has been positive. It's a great value in a great location.

My wife and I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and enjoy making shorter trips for lunch and dinner on the spur of the moment. We traveled to Yountville for lunch last weekend and decided to stay for the night.
We had stayed at the Railway Inn once before, found it to be very cozy and, looking up from our bed at the trees and sky through
the high windows of the clerestory section of the roof, felt we could be in a sleeper car of an old train traveling across the Canadian Rockies. How's that for an imagination?
There are no phones, but who would really care? This is a wonderful place located right amid the very best restaurants in Northern California, right in the heart of wine country.

After reading reviews and seeing how many positive ones there were we booked this Inn. We were so happy with our accommodations that we will be staying again. Prices are great, location excellent, and rooms roomy and well decorated. Being able to use the Fitness Center is a plus. A person unhappy with this Inn would have to be extremely picky and probably find fault at the "Ritz",

It was a 45 degree night and the heater didn't work. It took almost 3 hours to get the room warm enough to be comfortable. The shower was either scolding hot and high pressure or tepid and trickling out of the head. The toilet was hard to flush. The rooms are, basically, converted box cars and I seriously doubt that they were insulated. When we arrived, the office was closed and a sign said to go to the health club next door to get your key. The manager there was "kind enough" to get off the treadmill to get our key. Last, but absolutely telltale, when we left early in the morning we found that we were the only people staying in any of the 10 cars. Considerable, because the reason we ended up there was that every other hotel I called was full. Looked cute on the website but if you plan to stay there, make it a summer night.

The manager/owner of this property should realise that its reputation could benefit from a little TLC, or personal touches to the guest, etc. At $210/night, I realise it's not the most expensive Yountville accommidation, but hell, it's not cheap. It's also a slap in the face to pick up the hairdrier, iron, ironing board, etc to find that you are being warned about a instant fine to your credit card, if that item is missing. Who would stay at a place, be able to pay over $200, and then decide to take a crappy hairdrier with them? It is also extremely no frills. No WIFI, either!! The last bastion.... Our car also had a few skylights, located right above our bed, and they were without shading apparatus - early mornings for us, when we were so looking forward to sleeping in.
The plus is that it is a short walk to everything in Yountville. Very nice, indeed.
Also, the office wasn't manned for the most part, but you could go over to the healh club to get service...
That's my rant! They could do more to be convincing, caring capitalists.

Stayed 2 nights here and really enjoyed it. The room was larger than I expected, very clean and bright. (Number 5) They now have a reception office on site so you do not have to collect the key from the Gym. There are plenty eating places nearby but they do tend to close quite early.

The Napa Railway Inn is located in pricey Yountville. So, compared to its neighbors, the cost was very affordable. My wife enjoyed the unique rail car rooms, and the furnishings were quite nice. The bathroom was very small and simple and could use some updating, however this would be limited by the constraints of the size of the cars. Overall, we would recommend it to others.
