“Great for Kids”
Reviewed August 23, 2012

Our kids (6 and 8 years old) had so much fun the first time, we had to come back. Lots of things for the kids to do - a play area, water park, pool, mini golf, hiking. Movies on weekends. Well maintained.

We just returned from spending 4 days (in an RV) at the Willits KOA and we are talking about making this a yearly tradition. If you have kids, there is so much to do without leaving the resort:

-Petting Zoo
-Large play structure – similar to what you will find at Jungle Island (for those from the Bay Area)
-Large pool, wading pool (1ft deep) and spa
-Water play area
-18 hole miniature golf course
-Disc (Frisbee) course
-Fishing pond
-Basketball court
-2 play structures.
-Arcade
-Game room w/ pool table
-Bike rentals
-Train Depot stop for the Skunk Train on KOA property
-Movies ‘on the green’ at 9pm most nights
-Sunday pancake breakfast
-Ice cream social most nights at 7pm
-Kids events (hula hoop & limbo contest) most nights
-Karaoke most nights

We arrived on a Saturday and the park was packed. Lots of energy & tons of kids. Every space was taken at the pool. The park started emptying out on Sunday and then by mid-week it was maybe half full. Even with the park being at capacity on Saturday, the quiet hours were respected. This was the case for the rest of our stay.

There are a lot of staff patrolling the park, cleaning up and conducting maintenance and just checking in to see if all was well. Every staff member we encountered were very friendly and helpful. The bathrooms and showers are unlocked and open during the day, but locked at night. When you check in, you are given a code to use. The showers and bathrooms are very clean.

If you don’t have an RV, no worries. There are also Kamping Kabins and tent sites. All of the sites come with a picnic bench, fire pit and small BBQ.

Our kids were very sad to be leaving and only perked up when we said that we would be returning.

This KOA was incredibly fun for my family. Feed the animals in a clean area. Water splash park. Big play structure that is children only. A hike up to a fishing pond that was very quiet and we spent lots of time there. Large pool wkiddy pool. Hot tub. I noticed some of the RV sites had hot tubs. We stay at KOA because they are easier than motels with small children.

We just returned from a 4 night tent camping at the KOA in Willits. We have four small children and the KOA Willits was the perfect spot for us! We had to delay our arrival by one day..since it poured rain and the management was more than helpful to push our reservation ahead one day..We had two sites side by side in the overflow section(best kept secret of the KOA) since we had the entire huge space to ourselves for the first three nights! Plenty of room for the kids to ride their bikes and play on one of the two playgrounds in the overflow area!
I really felt like we were in the outback! Granted the toilets are a bit of a distance...but we had our bikes and drove our car to get to them since my mom in law (70 yrs) needed the ride! I was much obliged!

The camp is super manicured....incredibly maintained....in the early morning the lands-keepers , housekeeping and owners are out and about cleaning, tiding up and even cleaning the leaves off the mini gold course. You can tell that the staff are carefully trained, loyal to their management and are super helpful pointing us in the right direction.

After touring Willits...I can honestly say that KOA Willits is the best thing coming out of Willits. Second of course was the Lumberjack Restaurant which was also clean, hospitable and reasonably cost effective.

Bring a bike for the kids and you...if you can....lots of fun biking around. Fun hiking area..fish pond and a fully stocked camp store with everything you need! Almost every night there is a kids dance party....and ice cream socials..followed by a movie under the stars.

Amazing owners....who are kind, hard working, discreet and yet they run a tight ship! If you are a parent with children....this is the place for you. If you are retired couple with an RV this is the place for you. Much life and happiness is had within the beautiful KOA Willits gates!

We will return!

Room Tip: tent camp....ask for overflow area....lots of sun...

Yes, all the pieces are there at the Willits KOA. It is a well maintained campground with good facilities. And so maybe I am being unfair with my overall rating. And, maybe my tastes and preferences aren't the same as other campers who choose to stay here. Yet, two things cloud my opinion of the Willits KOA--possibly both are mere examples of one central concern. First, and admittedly, I have an aversion to signage. Granted, some is necessary and maybe more so in a place like the Willits KOA that, to a large extent, appears to cater to families and kids. However, IMHO, the abundance of signs seems a little extreme. Everywhere I looked at the campground there was a sign telling me what I couldn't/shouldn't do. Second and more importantly, we had a peculiar experience with the Manager. Specifically, we had an unexpected 2-night stop in Willits due to problems with our camper. We needed to order some parts from out-of-town. They were due to arrive about 1:00 P.M. on our second day; checkout time at the KOA was 11:00 A.M. We asked the Manager if we could stay for about an hour past check-out time. Suprisingly, she said "no" and when asked why, she said "rules are rules". We couldn't understand her decision. There were very few people staying in the campground at the time and hence there was ample space available. As far as we could tell, letting us stay for an additional hour would have absolutely no impact on her or the campground but would have made our situation just a tiny bit more comfortable. We were quiet and respectful while staying at the KOA and so her decision had nothing to do with our behaviour. Which brings me to the "central concern" mentioned at the beginning. It seems that the management of this KOA is focused on rules and control. Maybe they should lighten up a bit and possibly learn a bit more about public relations. Everybody else who we met in Willits during our stay were friendly, helpful, understanding and accommodating. Unfortunately, the Willits KOA wasn't cut from the same cloth.
