We stayed here in Sept 2011 and absolutely loved it! We stayed in Villa 4 which is not in the main castle but still rustic and just like you imagine a tuscan villa to be! The views are amazing, absolutely breathtaking. My daughter enjoyed a swim in the pool and we had a lovely meal in the restuarant one night. We had a vechicle (which is a 'must' in tuscany) and travelled to Florence, Pisa, Cinque Terre, Siena and San Gimignano for a day trips. We enjoyed our stay here in beautiful tuscany with the olive groves and vineyards scattered along the rolling hills - we didn't want to leave and definately will be back! Our villa was big and rustic and offered amazing views. Castle Montegufoni is highly recommended and is just like the beautiful pictures on the internet!

Room Tip: Make sure you take some insect repellent as the insects can get annoying!

I feel guilty for having waited so long to write this review. The review process would not allow me to choose anything prior to 2012. We were actually there in June, 2011. My husband and I were in Italy for over a month and a half and Castle Montegufoni was where we stayed the second two weeks. Once we got there we were sorry we stayed in Florence as long as we did. We wished we had planned more time in the countryside. The people there were wonderfully nice and helpful. Our room was appointed to meet all our needs. We had a kitchenette and close shopping available to stock it. The restaurant provided my husband and I with a romantic evening overlooking the impeccable gardens and great service. They also provided an iced bottle of wine to take back to the room. There was a sparkling blue pool siting in the middle of the gardens as well. I remember it fondly and look forward to visiting there again the next time we go to Italy. What a great break from the corporate hotel circuit and everything looking the same, old, boring way. Be sure to look for the shell alcove. What a beautiful work of art. Not to be missed. I was there two days before I found it. What fun to have a new discovery around every corner. Worth every penny. True, you may not have every creature comfort and people don't meet you at your car to take your bags, but if you step inside and ask, they are more than accommodating. My husband and I went for the art and beauty of it, not for the stand-on-your- head-and-make-us-feel-so-important, part. We have found, in our search for places like this, that you must set your priorities as so what is most important to you. Montegufonie fulfilled all of ours. We hope you enjoy the experience of it as much as we did.

We arrived at the castle with a few friends the third week of October and our first negative encounter was the bumpy potholed road and not a sign in sight to tell us we were close. Upon discovering we had no help with luggage we quickly decided to just bring in what we needed for three nites rather Than having to bring everything up a very steep hill. In the pictures the castle looked bright and elegant but our rooms were very worn and depressingly dark! The grounds looked like they needed a lot of work and even though it was a warm enough day for swimming the pool was freezing cold. We were also surprised To find out the owner had closed the restaurant which we had been told was very nice. We had a little area where we could make coffee if you wanted to go and buy all the supplies such as napkins, paper towel etc. They also expected you to empty your own garbage! Needless to say when we travel we are not looking for this we do it at home! Also they do not even clean the room or change linens until you leave and the third thing they did'nt tell us is that you have to pay a cleaning fee. Our next stop was Lucca where we stayed in a. Beautiful retored Villa Hotel with all the amenities for the same price!

Amazing castle - perfect for sparking children's imaginations. The hidden corners, corridors, tower, stairs, grotto, ruins, and grounds, were great for exploring with our two daughters. Antiques including coats of armour dotted the castle, bringing history to life. My husband also stayed here as a child and it has always remained a special place for him.
We travelled with grandma and stayed in a large apartment right beside the castle gates. It had 4 double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and was very spacious and comfortable. Great location, too - we could drive to central Florence in under 20 minutes or be at the beach in around an hour. We will be back!

Room Tip: The apartments outside of the castle are better suited to travellers with mobility challenges as the...

What a beautiful place! We spent 2 nights here for a wedding and it really was spectacular. The grounds are huge, the secret grotto incredible and the pool large (although very cold)! We had an apartment with an enormous kitchen/dining area a view of the grounds and room for 6 people. The people running Castello di Montegufoni are incredibly helpful, we found out that there was a locked room of hidden frescos in our apartment which they were more than happy to show us.
Just down the hill from the castle is a little village with a food store so close enough to be able to stock up and self-cater!
A really fabulous place - totally recommend it!

Our family of 4 including two teenagers (age 13 and 15) stayed in the Il Segretario Apartment at the Castello di Montegufoni for 7 nights. The apartment was huge with master bedroom with queen bed and a bedroom for our kids with twin beds. There was also a dining/living room, a good-sized kitchen and bath with large (old) bathtub. We had a large terrace on one side and a view into the courtyard on the other. It felt very antique since it was a 14th century castle. Unfortunately, there is no air conditioning so we had to leave windows and doors open which was a problem because of the mosquitos. It made sleeping a bit of a challenge. My other complaint is that there is no-where within walking distance to get breakfast. The restuarant at the castle opens at noon most days (I think it's closed on Wednesdays). It would have been nice to be able to get a coffee and croissant at least. The castle is a great location in Tuscany but unless you eat dinner there (which is just average), you need to drive to other restuarants on winding roads at night. We ate at the castle 3 nights because of this. Staff at the castle were great at booking restuarants. The pool is lovely and the grounds are gorgeous so for that experience, it was worthwhile but I think next time we'll stay somewhere with air conditioning and breakfast available. It's about a 30 minute drive to Florence. Taking the bus was just too inconvenient. We did our shopping nearby in Montespertoli, about 10 minutes away, in a nice COOP store. There is a washing machine at the castle but no dryer so we used a laundry horse on our balcony. Again, overall, it was a worthwhile experience but I wish they would just put in air conditioning units.
